Many genealogists have researched the English origins of the Thayer family of New England including Douglas Richardson,[1] Neil D. Thompson,[2] and Clifford L. Stott.[3] In 2004, The New England Historic Genealogical Society published Part III of "The ancestry of Eva Belle Kempton, 1878-1908" reflecting the current state of research on this topic.

In it the authors identify the person represented by this profile as "unknown Thayer" possibly the husband of "Constance ____." Only four children are identified:

2. THOMAS, born say 1533; buried at Thornbury, Gloucester, 17 March 1573;married by 1558 ____
3. JOAN, born say 1533; married at Thornbury, Gloucester, 15 November 1553 THOMAS JAMES
4. CONSTANCE, born say 1540; married at Thornbury, Gloucester, 19 February 1560(/1 ?] THOMAS HOLDBROOKE[4]

The other children show on this profile probably have no proven connection to this family group. The maiden name of his wife Constance is unknown. And the first name of the person represented by this profile is unsubstantiated.

Biography ==:Name: The mother of John and Thomas Thayer of Thornbury is often said to be Constance Unknown. This is based solely on a burial record of a Constance Thayer on 19 March 1561. There is no actual evidence that the woman buried in 1561 was their mother - she could have beentheir mother, aunt, sister, cousin, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, etc. <ref name="NEHGR 1906 #1">NEHGR (1906): 281-88. :There are other likely possibilities for the name in this generation,including the Agneta Thayer buried on 5 May 1571 (currently attached as an unproven child of Constance), and Joan Thayer buried on 4 May 1576. There is no actual evidence of any kind as to how these women should be attached to the Thayer tree..

Common Errors to Avoid ===:Conflagated persons: This profile previously mixed three completely separate women named Constance. The first was the supposed mother of John and Thomas Thayer who died on 19 March 1561. Second, was the Constance Thayer who married Thomas Holdbrooke on 19 February 1560 at Thornbury; she is usually thought to be a sister of John and Thomas Thayer and so a daughter of this Constance. Third, was Constance daughter of Thomas Holbrook and Edith Saunders. This last one an obvious confusion with name Holbrook.

:Incorrect birth date: Previously said to have been born on 3 Apr 1507 - this is incorrect. We don't know her LNAB, her parents , or her birth date. The 1507 date is an apparent confusion with Constancedaughter of Thomas Holbrook. :Incorrect death date: Previously said to have died on 4 March 1575. This date refers to a completely different person and not to the mother of John and Thomas Thayer. The name on this profile is a guess and a presumption that the Constance who died on 19 March 1561 was their mother; therefore, it is the only possible correct date.
