Constance Vivant belonged to a respected free black family. As she formed a new household and family, her husband in everything but name, Vincent Rillieux, Jr., bent the laws of inheritence and matrimony in her behalf, according her as many of the rights of a white woman in her place as he could. And yet, she was presumably as excluded from the family gatherins of her white relatives as she is from their family records.
