From Melissa Green on FamilySearch:
My mother's paternal grandfather was Emil Konstant Siukola, born 29 March 1882, died 16 May 1963 in Itasca County. He is buried in the Ball Bluff Cemetery in Aitkin County beside his wife Hilda (Beckman) Siukola, as is his son (my grandfather), William A. Siukola.
Among other endeavors in Minnesota, Emil ran a supply boat carrying food & dry goods between Aitkin and towns north of Aitkin on the northern Mississippi; he owned the first power-driven sawmill in northern Minnesota; and he at one point had a car dealership (one of the first in that area) in Hill City. He had a farm in Ball Bluff Township, which he lost not long after his wife Hilda's death in 1935. All of this information derives from my mother and aunt, who grew up in Jacobson.
My mother & aunt both tell me that Emil is written up in a history of the Finns in northern Minnesota, but neither of them could remember the book's title. Does anyone here know what that book might be? I have found him mentioned four or five times in the Aitkin County webpages transcribed from _Prosper, Can You Tell Me More?_ by Leo Trunt (which I have now ordered) , but I don't think this is the book my mother & aunt are referring to. Any other information you could point me to about Emil Siukola and his children William A. (my grandfather), Gustaph (died 1935, I believe in Crow County), Rauha (died 1925 in Hibbing), and Aili (still living), or Gustaph's wife Viano who reportedly remarried would also be appreciated.
I am also seeking information about Emil's wife Hilda (maiden name Beckman) and her siblings. I have the name of only two of them: a sister named Anna, and a younger brother named Sanfred who was reportedly a water witch and had a daugher named Gerty or Gertie. I am told that two or possibly three older brothers emigrated from Finland first, and then sent for Hilda and Anna. Sanfred emigrated later on his own.
Hilda died in 1935 after visits to the Duluth & Mayo Clinics. To pay for the visits, Emil Siukola reportedly mortgaged his farm to a good friend, who died shortly after Hilda died, and when Emil couldn't keep up the payments, the friend's sons reportedly foreclosed on the farm, and Emil lost it. Any information on these evens would also be appreciated.
