About Constantine Marcus Chew
Salinas Daily Index; Mon. Mar. 29, 1920, p. 4:
- *An Old Pioneer Crosses the Divide --
- C.M. CHEW Dies at Home of Son in National City --
C.M. CHEW, a respected pioneer of Monterey county, died at the home of
his son, John CHEW, in National City last Saturday and his remains will
be buried there.
The passing of Mr. CHEW, at the ripe age of 85 years, will be learned
with regret by many of the pioneers and other residents of this county.
He was one of the first settlers of the Jamesburg district, Chew ridge
being named after him. There he spent the best years of his life with his
faithful wife and devoted family. He was a familiar figure to the many
visitors to Tassajara Hot Springs who stopped at Jamesburg to change
horses and everyone loved the kindly old man for his many good qualities
of head and heart.
Mr. CHEW is survived by his wife and 2 sons, John CHEW of National City,
and Walter CHEW of Pacific Grove, who have the sympathy of a legion of
friends in their bereavement.

The Salinas City Index; Thurs., Sept. 29, 1881, p. 3:
In last Saturdays Californian a correspondent gives the following description of the marriage of C.M. CHEW and Miss Elenor B. JAMES, both of whom are well known here, especially to those of our citizens who have visited Millers Canyon or Tassajara Springs: Had you been taking a quiet stroll along the San Jose Canyon, about 11 oclock last Tuesday morning you would have been aware that something of more than ordinary interest was about to transpire. There, beneath the giant sycamores, you would have seen assembled a goodly company consisting of Mr.&Mrs. John JAMES, Mr.&Mrs. C.B. FINCH, Mr.&Mrs. J.H. COMPHER, Mr.&Mrs. W.W. THOMPSON, Mr.&Mrs. S.B. GORDON, Mr.&Mrs. B.V. SARGENT, Mr.&Mrs. Wm. TIBBETTS, Mrs. BELL, Mrs. WILSON, Miss GORDON, Miss SARGENT, Mr. ADDISON, Mr. Jas. FINCH, Mr. J.R. SARGENT, Mr. S. KOFLE, and a somewhat clerical looking individual known as Justice LAMBERT, with a number of others, whose names the writer did not learn. You would not have been kept long in suspense, for under the marshalship of Mr. C.B. FINCH a line was formed, in couples, and marched a distance of about half a mile to the beach shore. Under the inspiration of the grand old oceans waves Justice LAMBERT, being prepared with the necessary legal documents, by virtue of his official position, proceeded to unite in marriage Mr. C.M. CHEW and the young and lovely Miss Elenor B. JAMES. After the completion of the ceremony and the congratulations of friends, the happy groom and bride took the line of march for camp and were followed by the assembled company. Arriving at camp, 3 cheers and a rousing tiger were given for the newly married couple, after which, under the management of the gallant Mr. TIBBETTS, the hospitalities of Mr.&Mrs. JAMES were generously displayed.
