Cornelia Tappen (Clinton) Genet was born Jun. 29, 1774 in Orange County, New York to George and Cornelia (Tappen) Clinton. She married Edmond Charles Genet, a Frenchman, who served as Consul General from France to the United States. They were the parents of Edmond C., George C., Henry J., Charles A., and Cornelia T. Also had a daughter Maria Louisa b. 1802 d. 1888 and md. Cornelius van Rensselaer's 2nd wife.

Cornelia moved in powerful circles with her father serving as Vice President in the Thomas Jefferson and Madison Presidencies and her husband as Consul General. From Pat Perrella of Tallahassee, FL: "Here is the list of their children [from] Citizen Genet's journal that is with the collection at the New York Historical Society.

The only deaths he noted were Edmond Charles (1802) & George Clinton (1817) as the other children outlived him.
