About Cornelia Johanna Pickee
"From the 1822 register of pews in St Augustine’s, which sheds light on the city’s social divisions, we discover that none of the male members of the family had fixed places in the church. Only Veth’s mother (Cornelia Johanna Pickee) had an assigned pew, in the sixth row of the nave. The ‘regents’ pews’ at the front were reserved for the élite."
(excerpt from the book "A Lifelong Passion: P.J. Veth (1814-1895) and the Dutch East Indies" by Paul van der Velde, 2005, KITLV Press, an institution of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences)
