Cornelis Bogardus was baptized on 9 September 1640 at Reformed Dutch Church, New Amsterdam, sponsors Corn. Vander Oykens fiscael, Mr. Ludolf, Thyme Jans, Catharina Trasele, Tryntje Jonas. "Records of the Reformed Dutch Church in New York", New York Genealogical and Biographical Record Vols.5- (1874-): 5:29. Cornelis; parents: Do. Everardus Bogardus; witnesses: Corn. Vander Oykens Fiscael, Mr. Ludolf, Thyme Jans, Catharina Trasele, Tryntje Jonas.

Cornelis (1), second son of Dominie Everardus and Anneke Jans Bogardus, was born September 9, 1640, in the first parsonage, located on Brugh street, New Amsterdam. He was baptized in the wooden church which had been erected for his father years before. This unpretentious little building, with peaked roof, was situated near the bank of the East river, and on the lot adjoining the garden of the parsonage which is now No. 45 Pearl street. When Cornelis was a small boy of seven, his father having perished at sea, his mother leased the home, and, taking her children and all her household belongings with her, removed to Beverwyck (now Albany), where Cornelis lived with her and his brothers in what was a comfortable home in those days, situated on what was to be the chief street of the capital city, State street. The site of this home is now occupied by the Farmers' and Mechanics' Bank.

Cornelis (1) Bogardus married, in 1664, Helena Teller, born in 1645, daughter of William and Margaret (Donchesen) Teller. Previous to his marriage, Cornelius Bogardus bought a house from Willem Jansen, for which he paid "85 good, whole, merchantable beaver skins, reckoned at 8 gulders apiece, with which payment the grantor acknowledges he is fully paid and satisfied." This transfer was made on September 11, 1663.

He lived to be only twenty-six years old, his demise occurring in Albany in 1666, only two years after his marriage. His widow, Helena (Teller) Bogardus, married (second) Jan Hendrickse Van Ball; she married (third) Francois Rombout.

Cornelis (1) and Helena (Teller) Bogardus had one son, Cornelis (2).

Cornelis Bogardus married Helena Teller, daughter of William Teller and Margret Duncanson, on 24 August 1663. William Brower Bogardus, Dear "Cousin": A Charted Genealogy of the Descendants of Anneke Jans Bogardus (1605-1663) to the 5th Generation - and of her sister, Marritje Jans (Wilmington, OH, U.S.A.: Anneke Jans and Everardus Bogardus Descendants Association, 1996), p.13, chart no.1.

He was a "gunsmith" (probate inventory). Ibid., Cornelis Bogardus died before 6 May 1666 at Beverwijck, (now Albany, New York).4

On 11 September 1663 at Beverwijck, Willem Jansen Schut grants and conveys to Cornelis Bogardus, his house and lot lying in the village of Beverwijck bounded on the westerly side by the house and lot of Anderies Herbertsen, present owner Jurriaen Jansen (Groenwout), on the northerly side by the highway, on the easterly side by Jacob Loockerman, and on the southerly side by the garden of said Jurriaen Janssen. Jonathan Pearson Early Records of the City and County of Albany, and Colony of Rensselaerswyck (1656-1675), Vol. 1 (Albany, N. Y.: J. Munsell, 1869), page 333.

Witnessed the baptism of Annetje Bogardus , daughter of Willem Bogardus and Wynnetje Sybrants, on 3 October 1663 at Reformed Dutch Church, New Amsterdam, (sponsors Cornelis Bogardus and Marritie Loockermans).

"Records of the Reformed Dutch Church in New York", New York Genealogical and Biographical Record Vols.5- (1874-): 6:154. Anna; parents: Wilhelmus Bogardus, Wyntie Sybrants.

Child by Helena Teller:

Cornelis Bogardus b. 13 Oct 1665, d. 13 Oct 1707 William Brower Bogardus, Dear "Cousin": A Charted Genealogy of the Descendants of Anneke Jans Bogardus (1605-1663) to the 5th Generation - and of her sister, Marritje Jans (Wilmington, OH, U.S.A.: Anneke Jans and Everardus Bogardus Descendants Association, 1996), p.13.

Cornelis Bogardus died before 6 May 1666 at Beverwijck, (now Albany, New York). Ibid., chart no.1.

This was the first of three people of this name in a row. The third was the only one to call himself "Cornelius," with the "u." This Cornelis died young (age 26) having married ONLY Helena Teller, who then married twice more with children. Cornelis and Helena had only one child... Cornelis Bogardus who married Rachel DeWitt. For full documented lines and no confusion, see William Brower Bogardus' brilliant book, "Dear Cousin," which covers the first five generations of descendants of Anneke Jans.
