About Cornelis Valck, SV/PROG

Alias: Kornelis / Cornelus / Cornelius Valk.

Cornelis was born in (came from) Flensburg, Germany, not in Amsterdam

Cornelis did baptize his children in Amsterdam in a German/Dutch church, but, Evangelical Lutheran is a religion from Germany, not from the Netherlands. Cornelis lived in Amsterdam, but he was from Flensburg in Germany, very near to the border of Denmark (and he was probably also born there or nearby there) as the official Dutch East India Trade Company archives in the Hague in the Netherlands (Den Haag) tells us. He worked for the Dutch Navy as a Constable and a Corporal and he was ordered to go to Batavia in the Dutch-Indies for the 'Dutch East India Trade Company' and its chamber in Amsterdam where he was working for, starting on the 26th of december 1699. He came back from Cape and the Dutch-East-Indies to the Netherlands (to get his family ?) afterwards, to leave soon after that to Cape, South-Africa where he had been before many times with the Dutch Navy on his journey to the Dutch-East-Indies. Cornelis was actually employed by the Dutch East India Trade company, being a Constable and later a Corporal in the Dutch Navy. The Dutch Navy was protecting the fleet from the Dutch East India Trade Company. The Dutch Navy and the VOC (Dutch East India Trade Company) did work very close together. Cornelis became the founder of an Estate in South-Africa

Cornelis became a farmer in South-Africa, farming on his own land. He founded the estate Valkenberg, which eventually became the Valkenberg Hospital in PInelands, Cape Town, Western Cape, South-Africa.

Valkenburg Homestead, named after Cornelis

Right now the Homestead (Hoeve in Dutch) 'Valkenburg' is a historical/architectural significance, built on land granted in 1661. The Valkenburg Homestead is one of the only original homesteads still standing on the Liesbeeck River. It was named after Cornelius Valck who became the owner in 1720.

Valkenburg Manor House, Black River Parkway, Observatory

Built on land granted in 1661, the Valkenburg Homestead is one of the only Original homesteads still standing on the Liesbeeck River. It was named after Cornelius Valck who became the owner in 1720. The north wing, with its curvilinear parapet, was added to the original U-shaped house by Cornelius de Waal, who bought the property in 1746. The western section, with its neo-Classical gable, was rebuilt by Cornelius Mostert c.1815. The farm was subsequently divided in and in 1881 the house and out-buildings became part of the Valkenberg Hospital. The Manor House became the property of the National Monuments Council in 1985. Shortly thereafter it was restored by Rosenfontein Restaurants.

Cornelis as a witness at a baptism of his grandchild in Cape Town

Cornelis was a beerbrewer in Cape, brewing the herbs he himself grew ?

Different people by the same name in Cape

Meanwhile Jan de la Fontaine, Adriaan van Kervel, and the equipagie-meester (naval superintendent) Cornelis Valk of the Cape had also been sent off, and they sent a report on the 30th November that they had found the upper and under helmsman as well as de derde waak (third watch) of the wrecked ship at the house of Philip Morkel with yet 80 of their shipmates, having left 3 of their mates in the veld and one who had come on in a wagon. These testified that it was impossible to approach the ship on account of the heavy seas, and that they had been wonderfully lucky to have saved themselves as their boat had been smashed. The masts of the ship had fallen overboard and the whole of the after part broken away. There was only half a leaguer of water on shore which caused them to set out for the Cape. [My guess is that this Cornelis is the other Cornelis Valk from Amsterdam who was married to Marritie Overtoom and still worked for the VOC when our ancestor Cornelis was a farmer and beerbrewer in the Cape already. http://family.morkel.net/wp-content/uploads/The-wreck-of-the-Schone... Recia]

I also know there was another Cornelis Valk living in Cape, baptizing his son there in 1725. He was a church member of the Dutch Reformed church and he was married to Gezina / Gesina Meijboom, Gezina was widow of her husband Cornelis Valck in 1734. So we do have to be careful not to mix up our Cornelis Valck from Flensburg with other people named Cornelis Valck / Valk, there were more of them ! There was also another Cornelis Valck from Amsterdam (living at the same time as our ancestor Cornelis Valck) who also worked for the VOC, but he is also a different person who was married to Marritie / Marietje Overtoom. In the official Dutch VOC archives these two men Cornels Valck are mentioned as Cornelis Valck from Amsterdam and Cornelis Valck from Flensburg (our Cornelis Valck, who only later moved to Amsterdam and became from Amsterdam too, but was actually originated from Flensburg). There was also a Cornelis Valk who was married to Catharina Jansz van Maurit[ius] in Cape in 1720.

When in 1721 did our Cornelis Valck die ? Is this about his belongings ?
