About Cornelius Stagg
pilgrims-not fleeing to Holland on account of religious liberty, as did our pilgrim fathers of English descent-but they fled from Holland and took up an abode in Scotland. This happened soon after the accession of William, Prince of Orange, who came to the throne of England, jointly with his wife, Mary, a sister of the deposed king, James II. The king had been forced to abdicate on the grounds of his partiality for Popery, and the Staggs, being ardent Protestants, expected to find, under the protection of their countryman, the Prince of Orange, greater religious freedom than they were even enjoying in Holland....During Queen Anne's reign the family decided to leave Scotland and to emigrate to the new world, and coming over in the ship, Caledonia, bearing the poetic name of Scotland, settled near Trenton, New Jersey. http://ingenweb.org/indecatur/Pioneers/PhillipDoddridgeStagg.htm
