About Cornelius W Wiebe, III

Written according records found by Marjorie (Warkentin) Voth, and published 1996, 'Cornelius Wiebe' :

Cornelius was born on April 5, 1877 at Hochstadt (East Reserve). He spent his childhood and youth on NE-33-5-5E where his parents and grandparents homesteaded after coming to Canada in 1875.

Helena Peters and Cornelius met (somehow) and married in 1899. There to oldest sons were born in the East Reserve before the family moved to NW-8-4-1W Rosenfeld. Accounts of land there also list Cornelius' parents and brother. From here Cornelius and his brother, John, moved to 25-6-1W in 1902 when they purchased a 1/4 section from Fred Last. This was know as the Scratching River area and is where Helena (Lena), Aron, and Marie were born. Farming was their man source of income but Cornelius and John are said to have dug wells in the Brunkild area - perhaps to help with finances. Neighbors that I was able to locate has Anglo-Saxon names and this could be one of the reasons for the move to Rosenheim (near Horndean) in 1907. Here Cornelius and John bought 400 acres of land.

In 1901 they divided ownership and Cornelius owned and operated the West 1/2 of the section 15-3-2W and the west of the northeast 1/4 of 10-3-2W. He also rented his brother, John's land.

Soon after the birth of their ninth child, Abe, Helena is said to have caught a chill while hanging out diapers. She became very sick and passed away on January 28, 1915. The funeral took place in the house and she was buried in a plot in Heide's pasture on NW/NE 16-3-2W.

Cornelius sought a housekeeper and one of Helena's nieces, Helena Dyck, came to help out. Cornelius and Helena were married on April 4, 1915 in the Winkler Mennonite Brethren Church. Helena Dyck was born on August 12, 1884 to Peter and Anna Dyck. Someone later commented that there never were any pigs on the Cornelius Wiebe farm nor was there any coffee served for refreshment until Helena (Dyck) introduced these to the Wiebe household.

Extra land was not available in the Horndean area and with a large family growing up. Cornelius needed more farmland to provide for them. There were 10 children by now. A brother-in-law knew of some land in the Burwalde distract. Cornelius decided that this would be a good move. He, with the help of family members and the Dyck brothers, loaded all the Wiebe household goods, belongings, and children on hay racks and wagons. The sheep, horses, and cattle traveled alongside. There was no snow on the ground on that beautiful November day in 1917 when the move was made. One sheep was injured and had to be butchered along the way.

Prior to the move, several of the boys went on ahead to do some field work. They batched temporarily in the attic of the Mott's house. The sight of the big, white farmhouse, purchased from Mannfred Mott, created a great deal of pleasure and excitement.

3 more children were born before Helena passed away on September 19, 1923 as a result of a burst gallbladder.

Cornelius was a widower for 3 years - the older girls - Helena (Lena), Marie and Tina, looking after the household. He also is said to have taken in a Dyck family that came from Russia maybe to help out the family as well as to get some help.

On November 28, 1926 he married Elizabeth (Groening) Harder in a house wedding in Burwalde. She brought with her 4 children from a previous marriage. Elizabeth had been working in various households to earn some money to pay for their ocean voyage from Russia.

7 more children were born. The total number of children was 25 (3 had passed away). Cornelius and Elizabeth celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in 1951. They retired to 165 9th Street, Morden in 1952, moving into a house. Retirement for Cornelius was not a life spent traveling abroad but rather it was spent reading, attending Church functions, lending a helping hand to children and acquaintances, etc.

Elizabeth passed away July 24, 1962. Cornelius continued to live in the house on 9th Street with his 2 daughters, Lizzie and Annie. He remained active - walking to the post office for the mail, mowing the lawn - till the summer of 1974, Cornelius passed away August 12, 1974.

This is but a skeleton of the life story of Cornelius Wiebe . This entire book should give you a better idea of some of the life of the father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
