About Corp. (CSA), William Ballard Calfee
William Ballard Calfee was the 1st child born to James Davis Calfee and Nancy Sayers.
At the beginning of the Civil War, William B. Calfee enlisted as a Corporal in Company F, 54th VA Infantry, CSA; serving 3 years.
He fought in 10 major battles, including Round Top & Missionary Ridge at Chattanooga.
An excerpt from "Kinnesaw Mountain, Sherman, Johnston and the Atlanta Campaign." by Earl T. Hess, page 41:
"For many wounded Confederates, a long & painful journey toward an uncertain future lay ahead." 'I have met with a very sad fate' wrote William B. Calfee of the 54th VA to his father. 'I was severely wounded (on the 22nd of July, 1864 at Kolb's Farm) in the right arm, and also had it amputated the same day.' Calfee was transported to Kingston Hospital near Atlanta & was recovering well, a few days after the battle. 'The Federals gave me a good one - an immediate discharge, for a man will not be worth much without his right arm. Calfee had good reason to hope for recovery as long as the "gangrene" did not begin to trouble the exposed flesh of his stump."
After the war, he remained unmarried, living with his unmarried sister, "Sally Ann", they farmed the family property.
