On 9 Nov., 1795 he married Susannah Nickum in Mercer Co., KY where his father, Jonathan sanctioned his son's marriage (photos). In 1810, Cortland and his growing family were still living in Mercer Co., KY (8 children; 3 boys and 5 girls under age of 15). He moved to Ohio soon after enlisted with the 2nd Regiment Ohio Militia. He was assigned to Capt. Daniel Rex's Company from 3 Apr., 1813 - 3 Oct., 1813 as Private Courtland Lambert. A newspaper ad shows Cortland appraised a horse in July of 1814 (photo). Cortland was discharged on 3 Oct, 1816.
A Preble County Court will records Cortland made a purchase at the estate auction of John Stephens on 19 May, 1819. He purchased a mattock for $2.50 (photo). Eaton, Washington Twp., Preble Co., Ohio was the home of this family of 12 in 1820. That same year on September 14, 1820 his daughter, Hannah, married. In 1824, Cortland owned a grist mill and lived near Friendship Church in Ohio. In that year one of his daughter's (Ruth) married. In 1826-1827 he paid taxes in Gasper Twp., Preble Co., Ohio.
On 7 Nov., 1837, Cortland was granted 80 acres of land in Indiana while living in Preble Co., Ohio (photo). In 1840 Cortland and his wife Susannah resided in Harrison Twp., Darke Co., Ohio: (Cortland Lambert-male person age 60-under 70 yrs. with female person age 60-under 70 yrs). Sadly, on 30 Apr., 1846 his wife, Susannah passed. Cortland's death occurred on 29 Aug., 1859 at 87 years of age. Both are buried in Hollandsburg Cemetery.

Cemetery record states b. July 27, 1772, but military papers record his birth as April 27, 1772.
NOTE: In an effort to be thorough, Cortland's biography is lengthy to ensure his memorial is not confused with the memorial of Phillip Van Courtlandt Lambert #30280846 who was buried in Indiana. What is known is Cortland Lambert #41994045 consistently used his birth name throughout his lifetime (military, government on all levels and in his everyday life). Additionally, several of his children identified their father as Cortland and acknowledged he was born in New Jersey.
