His brother William III of Wied (1455/60 - 1526) was Count of Wied and Moers, Lord of Runkel and of Isenburg, who married in 1481 the Countess Margareta von Moers (1470 - 1515) who left to him in 1503 largely the rights to Wied, Runkel, Isenburg and Braunsberg.

Marriage & Children...
In 1506, John/Johann married his first wife the Countess Elisabeth von Nassau-Dillenburg (1488–1559) the daughter of Count John V von Nassau-Diez (1455–1516) and his wife the Landgravine Elisabeth von Hesse (1466–† 1523). The descendants John/Johann III & his wife Elisabeth were...

1) Elisabeth von Wied-Runkel (1506/10 - 1542), married since about 1522 to Anton I of Isenburg-Büdingen-Ronneburg-Kelsterbach (1501–1560), who issued a Protestant church order in 1544, double epitaph in St. Mary's Church in Büdingen,

2) Margarethe von Wied-Runkel (1506/10 - 1572), married c.1523 firstly to Bernhard von Bentheim-Steinfurt (1490/95 - 1528), and secondly in 1534 to Count Arnold I von Manderscheid-Blankenheim (1500 - 1548); she known for her medical knowledge,

6) Frederick IV of Wied (1518–1568), Archbishop of Cologne from 1562 until his resignation in 1567 when his brother Johann V instituted Reformation,

7) Walpurga Johanna von Wied-Runkel (1510/15 - 1578), married since 1528 to Ludwig zu Stolberg-Königstein, who introduced the Reformation in his territory in 1540, double epitaph in the collegiate church of St. Mary in Wertheim,

8) Agnes von Wied-Runkel (1520 - 24 March 1588), married firstly in c.1540 to Kaspar I von Mansfeld-Hinterort who was killed in 1542 in Hungary, and secondly in 1545 to Count Friedrich Magnus I von Solms-Laubach (1521–1561) who had introduced the Reformation in Laubach in 1544,

9) Genoveva von Wied-Runkel (1522 - 1556), married since 1546 to Wolfgang von Stolberg-Königstein,

10) Maria von Wied-Runkel (b. c. 1522; † 1563), married since 1554 to imperial heiress Christoph III Schenk von Limpurg-Gaildorf (1531–1574), whose father Wilhelm III Schenk von Limpurg-Gaildorf (1498–1552) had introduced the Reformation around 1540, around 1564 reconstruction of Untergröningen Castle.

11) In older literature, the nun and monastery administrator Ida Wied, who had been handed over by the widowed Countess Elisabeth von Wied, née Countess Nassau-Dillenburg in 1538 as a toddler with a lavish dowry to the nuns of the Premonstratensian monastery of Beselich, was sometimes considered an illegitimate daughter of the House of Wied. Although some have doubted Ida's link to the family, one must consider the time period and how an infant would have such a massive dowry if she were not.

In 1508, John/Johann concluded a border treaty with Count Gerlach (III) IV of Isenburg-Grenzau (1460-1533).

In 1511, John/Johann joined the Wetterau Counts' Association.

During a stay in Bad Ems (a famous spa city of European nobles and monarchs in the Rhineland-Palatinate of Germany), John/Johann was successfully treated by the physician Sigismund Admiratus (and/or the physician Johann Dryander) from Koblenz after an exchange of letters between Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim and a friend, the pharmacist and alderman Cornelius Rasener the Elder alias Favius (1474 - 1543/44). The report made a great impression on John/Johann's brother, Archbishop Hermann V von Wied, who had Dr. Johann Dryander ask Agrippa to come to him in Bertrich.

Data regarding how and where John/Johann died and was buried is yet to be known.
