About Cozijn Jansen Haring

baptism

1669 Feb 31; Jan Pieterszen Haring, Grietie Cozyns; Cozyn; Vrouwtie Gerrits {odd date} March meant?

He was a Deacon in1698. He was an Assessor in 1703. He was an Elder in 1713. In the local militia in 1715. Commissioned Captain in the militia in 1717. One of the five men who donated 97 acres of land to the Tappan Church in 1729. He left a will on September 13, 1733. He died in 1743. His estate was probated on June 13, 1743.

In 1683 the first settlers began moving into the (now Northvale) area and clearing the land. A Patent was granted to them in 1687 giving them legal title to the land. It became known as the Tappan Patent and was granted by the New York Colony because at that time there was no distinct boundary separating the Colonies of New York and New Jersey.

He built a stone farm house (Cozyn Haring House) in 1704 in the southwestern portion of the Tappan Patent [now 95 De Wolfe Road, Old Tappan, NJ].

The Delaware Indian word "Tuphanne" is where the name Tappan is derived from. It means cold water. Why it was named Old Tappan no one knows, but it is believed that it was to distinguish it from Tappan, New York, of which Old Tappan was formerly a part. In 1704, Cosyn Haring, one of the original sixteen patentees, obtained a land grant from Queen Anne of England for most of the land which is now Old Tappan.
