About Cpl. Anthony Manuel
Anthony Manuel was born at Avarua in Rarotonga in the Cook Islands on 1 May 1895. His father was Luke Manuel of Marairenga, Manuera, Rarotonga. Anthony enlisted to serve during World War I from the island of Rarotonga on 30 September 1915. He disembarked at Suez on 15 March 1916 and embarked for France on 9 April 1916. Anthony would serve in both Western Europe and Egypt. He was admitted to 7th General Hospital at St Omer suffering from German measles. He was later admitted to 8th Casualty Clearing Station on 13 August 1916 and then to 35th General Hospital in Calais on 15 August 1916. Anthony was transferred to the UK on Hospital Ship 'Newhaven' and admitted to the 2nd London General Hospital on 1 September 1916. On 2 November 1916 he was transferred to the 2nd New Zealand General Hospital at Walton-on-Thames with a tubercle on the neck. He underwent three operations before being returned to New Zealand on the Hospital Ship 'Marama' departing the UK on 3 January 1917. Anthony died of tuberculosis at Auckland Hospital on 10 May 1917 and was buried at O'Neill's Point Cemetery in Auckland [note that his war record and headstone incorrectly record his name as Manuel Anthony].
