About Cpl. Richard Piner
Richard Piner was born in Sheffield in Canterbury, New Zealand on 22 May 1899. His parents were Charles Edward Piner and Annie Isobel Piner (nee Newton) who had married in Christchurch on 4 June 1882. During World War I, Richard served with the Otago Infantry Regiment, D Company. He was invalided home, suffering from diabetes mellitus. His brother, Ernest Piner, was wounded whilst serving with the New Zealand Field Artillery in France, and died of his wounds in the 37th Field Ambulance. He was buried in Dartmoor Cemetery. Richard and Jane Dalzell married on 29 November 1919. Richard died in Christchurch Hospital on 13 August 1921 at the age of 22. He was buried in Sydenham Cemetery. Jean remarried to William Edward Pratley at Sydney, Australia, in 1926.
