About Creed Haymond

Republican. Lawyer; member of California state senate, 1875-77; delegate to Republican National Convention from California, 1880, 1888.

Married Miss Cornelia Alice Crawford on October 2, 1872, a native of the town of Auburn, Placer County, California.

Died at the Grand Hotel in San Francisco, California at the age of 56 years, 8 months, 21 days, of septicemia. (comlications of liver and stomach troubles of long standing which culminated in Bright's disease)

"He was only sixteen years old when stirred by tales of California's gold. In 1849 he joined a band of kindred spirits, none of them old enough to vote, and crossed the Great Plains heading for Sierra Nevada Range in California.

He engaged in various occupations that the quick changes of the times demanded. In 1859, with ex-Governor James A. Johnson as a partner, he opened a law office in Downieville, Sierra County. He was widely known as solicitor-general for the Southern Pacific Railroad and was also prominently identified with public service in important connections. His success in criminal trials was remarkable, and some of the most desperate cases were defended by him. In civil practice he was equally successful. He was attorney for the hydraulic miners in the first case brought against them and won his suit.

He was Chairman of the Code Commission for the State of California, the first complete code of laws ever adopted by any State in the Union or any English speaking people in 1872.

Sacramento District State Senator 1875-1877.

He was for a long time Colonel of the 1st Artillery Regiment, National Guard, and in 1860 was Captain of the Sierra Greys, a Sierra County militia company, under Colonel Jack Hays, against the Indians of Nevada after the Pyramid Lake Massacre. In this campaign against the Indians, Captain Haymond was slightly wounded. Two severe battles were fought- one on the Truckee and the other on the Carson below Wadsworth.

In 1880 Mr. Haymond was sent to the Republican national convention which nominated Garfield, and again represented California in the national convention of 1888.

The name of Mr. Haymond will always be linked to the Leland Stanford Jr. University. He, with Governor Stanford, drew the act and formulated the provisions under which this university was to be founded and perpetuated."
