Black Coat was the second western Cherokee chief, serving with first chief John Jolly and third chief Walter Webber. Black Coat participated in the Cherokee was against the Osages and was with the group that captured the Osage girl Maria James. He took her into his own home and treated her as if she were his real daughter. A white man tricked him into thinking he could give her a better home, but instead, sold her into slavery. She was rescued with the help of the governor of Arkansas and placed in Dwight Mission.
