Pedro de Zúñiga y Leiva († in 1453), 1st Count of Plasencia, 2nd Lord of Béjar, 1st Count of Ledesma (which he lost because he had to return it to its former owner the Infante Enrique of Aragon), 1st Count of Trujillo, (whom he renounced in exchange for the County of Plasencia), Lord of Ayamonte, Miranda, etc. He married Isabel de Guzmán y Ayala, lady of Gibraleón.

He was succeeded by his son: Álvaro de Zúñiga y Guzmán († in 1488), 2nd Count of Plasencia, 3rd Lord of Béjar, 1st Duke of Arévalo, 1st Duke of Plasencia, 1st Count of Bañares, 1st Lord of Ayamonte, Gibraleón, etc. 

The primitive county of Plasencia became extinct in 1476, when the Catholic Monarchs elevated this county to a duchy with the same name, in favor of Álvaro de Zúñiga y Guzmán, in compensation for the loss of the Duchy of Arévalo, which reverted to the Crown.

The title was revived by King Philip III who granted it to Pedro Lanuza y Ximénez de Urrea in 1611.
