Daantjie van Vuuren

Daantjie van Vuuren (1963 - 2006)

Daantjie (43), a professional hunter employed by farmer Günther Heimstädt of farm Elandsputz, was shot by stock thieves on 7th December 2006, in the Outjo area, Windhoek, Namibia. He was shot in the pelvis.

The stock thieves had shot a heifer on a farm and loaded it onto a pick-up truck, which broke down along the road. Daantjie found them and an argument ensued, and one of the perpetrators shot him with a .308 hunting rifle, after which his body was dragged off the road into the grass.

The five accused - Willem Peter (38), Gert Nuxabeb (25), Jafet Nuxabeb (21), John Khamuxab (20) and Johannes Heiki (67), were charged with murder, stock theft, theft, theft of a motor vehicle, defeating the course of justice, mutilating a registered livestock brand, possession of a firearm without a licence and illegal possession of ammunition. They stood before Judge Louis Muller in the Windhoek high court in October 2009, all of whom plead not guilty to eight charges.

Immanuel Isako (35), the shooter was not in court, he died on 21st May 2009, four months before the start of his trial and after he had spent a year and a half in Police custody.

Outjo medical doctor, Gerhard Burger, testified that Daantjie died as a result of a gunshot wound through his pelvis. "Van Vuuren could have lived for ten to at the most twenty minutes after being shot," Dr Burger said.

"He told the Judge that he also found several other injuries on Van Vuuren's body. These included lacerations on Van Vuuren's head and several abrasion wounds around his left elbow, on the inside of his left wrist and on his right shin."

A .223 rifle, ammunition and compact discs were stolen from Daantjie's pick-up truck.

The trial continued.

Numerous farm attacks and murders happen in Namibia, and as Daantjies murder occurred outside of South Africa, it does not fit within the strict definition of a South African farm attack.
