Cunningham, Earl of Glencairn

  • 'Cunningham02'
  • Alexander Cunningham, 1st Earl of Glencairn (d Sauchieburn 11.06.1488)
  • m. Margaret Hepburn (dau of Adam Hepburn, Master of Hailes)
    • 1. Robert Cunningham, 2nd Earl of Glencairn (d by 1492)
    • TSP (Glencairn) reports that, because James IV revoked some of the appointments of his father, this Robert was "deprived the dignity of an earldom conferred on his father". James IV reinstated the earldom after Robert had died. Accordingly, TSP numbers subsequent Earls differently from (say) BE1883 (eg. Cuthbert identified by TSP as 2nd Earl). We follow the numbering used by BE1883 and BP1934 (Cuninghame of Caprington).
    • m. (before 19.07.1476) Christian Lindsay (dau of John Lindsay, 1st Lord of the Byres)
      • A. Cuthbert Cunningham, 3rd Earl of Glencairn (d 1540-1)
      • m. (mcrt 24.06.1492) Marjory (or Mary or Marion) Douglas (a 1511, dau of Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Angus)
        • i. William Cunningham, 4th Earl of Glencairn (b c1493, d 03.1547-8)
        • BE1883 reports that William left sundry children "by Margaret, or Elizabeth (Campbell), his 2nd wife". BPGS2001 reports that he m1. Margaret, m2. Elizabeth Campbell. We follow TSP which identifies his 1st wife as Katherine Borthwick. It is thought that William had issue by both marriages but, other than to note that most of the children noted below appeared to be adult by the time of the second marriage, it is not clear who if any of these noted was by the second marriage. We presume that none were (not least because Elizabeth must have been in her mid-40s by the time of the marriage) but note that some sources say otherwise.
        • m1. Katherine Borthwick (dau of William Borthwick, 3rd Lord)
          • a. .... etc.
        • m2. (after 01.1535-6) Elizabeth Campbell (dau of John Campbell of West Loudoun)
        • ii. Margaret Cunningham
        • Unless there were 2 sisters both called Margaret, which did happen occasionally around this time (to the consternation of many genealogists), either (1) there is something wrong with one or more of the dates given for her spouses, (2) one of these marriages should be attributed to a Margaret of a different generation, or (as we provisionally show) (3) the first marriage ended in divorce.
        • m1. (div?) Andrew Macfarlane, 12th of Arrochar (d after 21.12.1544)
        • m2. (by 11.1534) James Lyle, Master of Lyle (a 07.1551, dvpsp)
    • 2. .... etc.
  • Main source(s): TSP (Glencairn), BE1883 (Cuningham of Kilmaurs and Glencairn) with some support from BPGS2001 (Fergusson-Cuninghame of Caprington)
