Joseph and Benjamin took part in King Philip's War and later received Land Grants for their service. Thomas Barnes left his homestead on Town Path in Farmington to Joseph, who sold it in 1710 to Samuel Hooker, Jr. When Joseph Barnes sold the family homestead it was bounded on the north by the burying ground, showing that Thomas Barnes lived on the east side of the street. In 1713, Joseph Barnes left a pair of oxen off his tax list and was fined for the crime. In the following year, Barnes petitioned the General Assembly for the return of one half the fine, explaining that his circumstances were poor, that he had sold most of his land, had buried one daughter, and that his one son was in "a languishing condition." The General Assembly took pity and ordered half the fine returned. Joseph was baptized in
the Farmington 1st Cong. Church and was admitted 25 May 1690.
