Daniel came from Scotland and was one of the original 28 proprietors of Haddam CT. Information from "Some account of Cone Family in America" by William Whitney Cone: Information suggests that Daniel Mackhoe arrived in Massachusetts in 1652 on the ship "John and Sarah". His name is found on the ship's registry. It is believed that he was a Scottish Army Officer captured by Cromwell's Troops in the battle of Dunbar and changed his name to Daniel Cone on his arrival in America.(From a letter from John J. Cone to Rose (Martin) Landnesson, dated 6/ 16/ 1975) When Daniel settled in Haddam, He acquired land across the Connecticut River from the King. It is still known as Haddam. Below it is East Haddam. He had a farm on both sides of the river and every four years he would switch his crops from one side to the other to give the soil a rest. Book Title: The Old Chimney Stacks Of East Haddam

There are no facts behind the various stories about his origins, as seen in the attachment to this profile. Daniel's name may have been Cohen. There were also many Cohen's in Scotland, and there is no evidence that this is where he came from either.

This much is known?

He originally came to the Massachusetts Colony where he married Mahitable Spencer and remained until sometime before 1657 when he was mentioned in a letter from John Winthrop, Governor of the Connecticut Colony, to Peter Stuyvesant, Governor of New Netherlands.

SAID TO BE IMMIGRANT ANCESTOR. First mention of Daniel Cone was found in a letter from John Winthrop, Governor of the Connecticut colony, to Peter Stuyvesant, Governor of New Netherlands, dated March 2, 1657, published in the Massachusetts Historical Collections, by the Mass. Historical Society, in Vol. VIII, 5th series.

One of 28 persons to receive from the Connecticut Colony a grant of land situated on both sides of the Connecticut River, about thirty miles from its mouth (around May 1662) - the town was called Haddam (after Haddam, England).

Commissioner of his town in 1669, and held other minor offices.

Resided in Haddam, CT, until 1680, when he moved to the east side of the river, to near "Machi-Moodus" (Massachusetts?). Returned to Haddam around 1695, where he died in 1706. A few months before he died, he deeded his lands on the West side of the river at Haddam to his youngest son, Caleb. (Transcript of deed in slw possession.) (Also reportedly lived in Hartford.)

"Directory of the Ancestral Heads of New England Families 1620-1700", compiled by Frank R. Holmes (found in Orange FHC library 3-95): states "CONE" means, in the Hebrew, a bishop or priest; "KOEN' in Dutch, signifies bold, daring, intrepid. DANIEL is listed as a resident of Haddam, Conn. 1662.
