OBIT:
A very unusual life record is that of Mr. D. H. Dinsmore. He was the son of Mary and William Dinsmore and was born in Pleasantville, Ohio, October 28, 1848. He came to Iowa with his parents when he was nine years of age and lived in this community the rest of his life. He lived in a time and among a generation that saw unbroken prairie changed into a land of plenty and happiness. Independence, self-reliance, and purpose, backed by real courage and worked out through the sweat of the brow, made a real contribution to the welfare of the world during his day.
On October 22, 1872, he was married to Rachel Canon, the wedding being in her mother's home, the old Canon House Inn. To this union were born eight children, the last five of whom were born on the farm just west of Fremont, now owned by Mrs. Edith Purdin. For nearly fifty years prior to February 1927 this was the family home. Here the children grew to manhood and womanhood and were married. The sixty-third wedding anniversary was celebrated on October 22, 1935. On August 16, 1936 Mrs. Dinsmore passed away, preceding him in death by about 4 years, 10 months and 20 days.
Besides the eight children living there are twenty-eight grandchildren, all living. There have been thirty-five great grandchildren, of whom three preceded him in death. There have also been two great great grandchildren.
For a man of advanced years, Mr. Dinsmore had been in unusually good health and fine spirits. He made companions of the little boys along the streets. He took his walks and kept up on the interests of the day. He was a radio baseball fan and was disappointed if anything interfered with reports of the games.
Born in 1848, he was living in 1941 and alert to the trend of the times. He retired at his usual bedtime on Sunday evening--Monday morning he was ill, and passed away at 6:30 Tuesday evening, July 8, 1941, at the age of 92 years, 8 months, and 10 days.
The eight surviving children are Mrs. Lena Rhoads, Mrs. Nellie Aldridge, J.W. and Frank Dinsmore, and Mrs. Ethel Rhoads of Fremont and vicinity, C.C. Dinsmore of Ottumwa, Pearl White of Lexington, Kentucky, H.C. Dinsmore of Flint, Michigan. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Allie Krout of Des Moines and Mrs. Lillie McClain of Fremont, and a brother, C.F. Dinsmore of Mystic.
Mr. Dinsmore shared in his experiences, affairs of many decades and scores of people from widely separated sections and of many interests. We share the solemn sadness of his loss as well as the good things that he helped to win for posterity. And we join in the sincere tribute of appreciation paid him by old and young alike, including the little children who now miss him and his walks along our streets.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church in Fremont, Thursday, July 10 at 20:00 p.m. in charge of Rev. J.A. Wilson of Unionville and Rev. J.L. Alexander, pastor of the Methodist Church in Fremont. Music was provided by Mrs. C.N. Swanson and Mrs. William Hols, accompanied by Mrs. John Yenney. Pallbearers were grandsons of Mr. Dinsmore.
Out of town relatives attending the services were Mrs. Pearl White of Lexington, Kentucky, Clifford White of Chicago, Illinois, Dwight Dinsmore of Texas, Mrs. William Whalin of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Miss Mabel Keith, Mrs. Dell Keith, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Keith of Audubon, Mrs. Allie Krout and Mrs. T.J. Crawford of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dinsmore and William of Mystic, Mr. and Mrs. Rexall Dinsmore and Mary of Newton, Mr. and Mrs. Merwyn Dinsmore and Jimmie of Mystic, Mrs. Alice Thomas, Evelyn and Carol of Centerville, Mrs. Fred Cochran of Oskaloosa, Mrs. Ray Schakel, Mr. and Mrs. C.C.
