About Daniel Dunagan

DAR record

Daniel DUNAGAN Sr. was born in 1752 in Ireland. He died after 1822 in TN..

A descendant of Daniel, Rufus Newton DUNAGAN Jr. of Perry, OK., did considerable research on the family of Daniel and produced a paper titled, "DANIEL DUNAGAN, THE FOUNDING FATHER". Daniel served as a soldier in the American Revolution, enlisting in the 6th Regiment of Virginia on 7 Dec 1777 in Amherst County and served as a Pvt. in Capt. CABELL's Co., Col. BUCKNER's 6th Regiment for 2 years. After the expedition at Greene's Island he requested a transfer to Col. McLANACHAN's 7th Virginia Regiment of August County, later commanded by Capt. Joseph CROCKETT. He remained with the 7th Regiment and was at the Battle of Freeman's Farm when the British Gen. BURGOYNE was captured, in the Battle of Monmouth, and in various other engagements. He participated in SULLIVAN's campaign to Niagara after which period the Virginia Line was divided into three regiments. Daniel was then attached to Col. RUSSELL's First Regiment of the Virginia Company headed by Capt. William WHITE, also commanded by Col. BALL. He marched in this regiment to the south and remained with it until the siege and surrender of Charleston when he was captured on 12 May 1780, and held as a prisoner until 4 Mar 1781 when he was exchanged. Daniel was given an honorable discharge, after fulfilling his three year enlistment. He traveled to Richmond, VA. to file his discharge and draw his pay, this transaction is on file in the VA. State Archives in Richmond, VA. He later served and additional two years in the Militia and received his final discharge under Capt. William MOSLY. After his first tour of duty he was entitled to a bounty of 100 Acres of land from the state of VA., and was also entitled to a pension but it was not granted to him until he petitioned for it on 6 Sep 1819, at which time he was age 67 and resided in Greene Co., TN. For his service to this new Nation he received a certificate of pension on 15 Nov 1822 along with the sum of $335.72 for back pension due. He also received his veterans benefits of $8. a month.

Respondent is a sixth generation descendant of DANIEL DUNAGAN (aka Donaken, Donecan, Donekin, Dunican, Dunigan, Dunikin and more). The variable spelling of his surname is credited to: - Daniel was totally illiterate. - He spoke with an accent (Irish or Scotch) in which the letter "g" was sounded as "k" or "c" as in cat. - In records his name was written by clerks who determined spelling from how he sounded it.

END Chronology.

CHILDREN OF DANIEL (Dunikin) DUNAGAN

In Pension Hearing of October 1820, Daniel testified "he was the father of seventeen children, eight of which were young and still lived in his home." Assuming these eight were all no older than age 18 (born after late 1802) their mother would have been Mary, Daniel's second wife. Therefore the mother of the rest of Daniel's children (nine) must have been Jane, his first wife who died no later than 1801.

Children by first wife (nine):

Except for Nicholas, names and birth dates are unknown.
Nicholas b. 1787 was third or fourth child in this line; in 1820 he was near age 33.
See Vol. 1 Marriage Records of Greene County, Tennessee for possible names of Nicholas' full brothers and sisters (all passed age 19 in 1820).

   Andrew	b. c1806
