During the Civil War he served briefly as a private in Captain Charles Du Bignon's Company, Phillips' Legion Georgia Vounteers; on October 30th, 1861, he was discharged as 'unfit to perform the duties of a soldier in consequence of pulmonay disease with repeated hemorrhages' he died less than a year later. Daniel Elliott was the uncle of future President, Theodore Roosevelt. He was the half brother Theodore's mother, Martha "Mittie" Bulloch.
