Major Daniel Heim Died at Nine O'Clock Thursday Night
HE WAS AGED EIGHTY YEARS
His Death Was Caused by a Complication of Diseases-ARespected Citizen of Sunbury-The Story of His Life-Survived by His Aged Wife and Seven Children
Major Daniel Heim died at his home in this city at 9o'clock Thursday night. He was ill for several weeks and his death was hourly looked for Thursday. His aged wife , children and grandchildren were with him when the end came. His illness was caused by complication of diseases. He was aged eighty years, three months and fourteen dyas. Funeral services were held at his late home on Market Street, near Fourth, at half past one o'clock on Monday afternoon. Intermentat Pomfret Manor Cemetery.
The Life of Daniel Heim
Daniel Heim was born in Upper Mahoney township, this county, January 4th, 1815. His parents were John and Sophia (Kohl) Heim, His grandfather came from Germany and was one of the pioneers of Upper Mahoney township. John Heim, farmer and school teacher died in 1824. He was the father of sixteen children, seven daughters and one son by his first wife, and six sons and two daughters by his second wife. The latter lived to be eighty-eight years old. Daniel was her 7th child. His mother remarried when he was about twelve years old, and he soon afterwards entered upon the battle of life among strangers. For three years he found employment among the farmers and thenin Union Co learned the carpenter trade. He followed that and mill-wrighting for eighteen years. In 1850 her engaged in the merchandise business in his native township and followed it for sixteen years. Then he came to this city and remained one year. He moved to Danviulle and kept the Danville Hotel one year. In 1870 he came th this city again and established his hardware business at it's present location. His son John, was a partner till 1879. Since that time Major Heim continued the business alone. Some years ago he retired from the active work, and the business was managed by his sons George, William and Oscar. He was one of the organizers of the Sunbury, Nail, Bar and Guide Iron Manufacturing company, and was chosen it's vice-president. In the ante-bellum days Daniel Heim was a captain of militia and lieutenant of a volunteer company. When Johnston was Govenor he was commissioned major of a uniform volunteer battalion and held that rank for five years. Major Heim was married in his native township on October 23rd, 1836 to Mary Hornberger, daughter of George Hornberger. They celebrated their golden wedding at their home in this city in 1886. They had 10 children: John H, jeweler;Lydia, Mrs Peter Ganser; Henrietta, Mrs Samuel H Snyder; Sarah A, deceased, wife of Charles Schlagel; Lou, widow of Albert Haas; James B who was in the Army and who died in 1865 while on his way home after being mustered out; George W; Capt William H; Mary E who died in 1863 and Oscar. Major Heim was an honored member of the Masonic fraternity. He was a devout and faithful member of the Zion Luthern Church of this city. He served one term as Chief Burgess of Sunbury.
