FORM MALONE AND ALLIED FAMILIES
By Dr. Randolph A. Malone
Pg. 9

Randolph Malone states that Malone roots are deep in Irish history and extend beyond that, and that during the reign of King David in Israel, over a thousand years before Christ, the Melesians conquered Ireland.

The Malones descended from these early Irish kings of Melisian descent, and from the seventh century A. D. onward, were a principal family in the County of Westmeath. The O'Malones were descendants of Conner and were originally of Connacht. The property of the O'Malones, a branch of the O'Connors, King of Connaught, and their prooerty in the barony of Brawney, in the County of Westmeath, were large and fertile.

At the close of the 17th Century, the Malones were one of the principal families in Ireland. Three Malones were in the 1689 Irish Parliament and the Rev. William Malone (1585 - 1659) was superior of the Jesuit Mission to Ireland. Anthony Malone (1700 -
1776) was a brilliant orator and chancellor of the Exchequer. His brother Edmund (1704 - 18 16) was a noted judge and also a member of Parliament. His son, Edmond Malone (1740 - 1812), a close friend of Johnson, Boswell and Edmund Burke, was a famous Shakespearean critic.

From these Irish roots the Malones immigrated to Colonial Virginia in the mid 17th Century.

Tracing the growth and development of the early Malone family in the Colonial period has been difficult because records in Charles City County, Virginia were largely destroyed in 1862 when General McClelland's troupes passed through in 1862. Union troops also destroyed most of the early records of Prince George County, the main area where Malone forebears settled and a daughter county of Charles City County,

In 1865, Daniel Malone [1-1] first appears in records in Charles County, VA where an early deed suggests that Malones were settled close to the south side of the James River. From 1665 - 1725, or maybe earlier, the family along with others closely associated moved southward, and in next found in surviving records were living along the border of Prince George County and Surry County north of the Nottaway River in a few square miles known in areas known as Jones Hole Swamp, Turkey Egg Creek; Reedy Creek, Southwester Swamp and Stony Creek. These waterways identify the locations of not only these early Malones, but their immediate descendants. Some of these Malones, in the period beyond 1725, acquired property and may even have moved south of the Nottaway River into Brunswick County, formed in 1720 along the southern Virginia border.

Randolph Malone indicates that the 1946 book of Eva Earnshaw Malone titled Jeremiah Dumas Malone stated that "Daniel Malone came to Virginia from County Westmeath, Ireland in 1655, a royalist fleeing from Cromwell. He states that although primary or secondary documentation for this have not been found, in spite of the fact that Daniel Malone would have been 12 years old in 1655, historical facts would agree with it, Family member Clint Malone researched this very subject and states as follows:

The importance of the Irish-English struggle to the Malone family climaxed in the time from 1649-1655. Murder and pillaging of the Irish families and land reached horrific levels. Oliver Cromwell landed in Dublin in 1640, and the following months would prove most horrid in Irish history. P. T. Sherlock states that Cromwell's purpose was to inflict a "sterner and firmer policy" on Ireland. Many women and children were banished to the West Indies, where they would "starve and die and rot" ... On September 11, 1649 Cromwell massacred 2,600 members of the garrison and other townspeople in Drogheda ... The County of Westmeath (the Malone family home county) is not far west of Drogheda, and news of the massacre spread quickly... During this time Malone ideas of refuge and freedom in America were born.

Daniel Malone (1-1) is apparently this Malone family's earliest known Virginia
ancestor. Little is known about him or his immediate descendants because most Charles City County records were destroyed in 1862 by McClelland's Union Army in the Civil War. The following is revealed by what few records are available:

On February 1, 1665, Daniel Malone 1-1 is first recorded in Charles City County at a court in Westover giving a deposition to the court justice Robert Wynne, also a Malone ancestor. Daniel, in this deposition is noted to be about 22 years of age, indicating his birthdate is about 1643. At this time Court Justice Col. Robert Wynne was about 43 years old.

The next Malone in existing records occurs ten years later in 1675 when Mary Maloone and Christopher Harrison witnessed an affidavit made by Rebecca Harrison. No other Malones are mentioned besides these two in Charles City County until the early 1690's, and no other Mary Malone is noted in records until 40 years later in 1717, so it might be assumed Daniel and Mary Malone were husband and wife, though no proof of their relationship is known to exist. The next record of Daniel Malone is again found in 1679 in Charles City Co., VA when Dan'l. Malone, noted in Court Orders three times in the winter and spring of 1679, is a defendant in a civil suit with Eusebias King, Daniel would have been about 36 years old at this time.

If Daniel Malone is indeed the progenitor of the Virginia Malones, he was probably dead by 8-3-1688 and his wife remarried. At a court on that date, "Robert Mallone, an orphan, and with consent of his father-in-law John Raine (?), chooses Samuel Tatem his guardian, who promises (to) allow the orphan at the end of his term, the usual things, and to use his utmost endeavor to cure his head." (We must remember that in Colonial records of that era "father-in-law" was also used to mean "stepfather.") Robert's head must have healed, because he received from the Charles City Co. Court 200 lbs of tobacco for killing wolves in 1694. Robert must have been a very young man in 1694. No further mention of Robert, Mary or Daniel Malone is found in existing Charles City Co. records. A Robert Malone married Mary Harrison in Somerset Co, MD. in 1728, but he is not likely to be the same Robert Malone, since the Somerset Co. Robert lived until 1779, which would make him about 100 years old at his death. What does stand out in these records is how intimately this Malone family was related to the Harrison family in the few records we have of them.

From the above records we can suggest the following summary: Daniel Malone, born about 1643 and living in Charles City, Co, VA appears to be the earliest Virginia Malone and probable progenitor of the southern Malone family. It would appear that his wife was Mary _____, noted in records there dated 1675. How many children he may have had is unknown, but it is likely that one child was Robert Malone who was not of age in 1688, and that his Malone mother had remarried John Raine It would seem, then, that Daniel Malone had died by 1688 and his widow had married John Raine. Robert Malone must have been a young man on his own by 1694. There is no proof of these relationships, but since Daniel, Mary and Robert are the only Malones mentioned in Charles City County, VA records, the circumstantial evidence is suggestive. The other Malone boys were probably too young to be apprenticed out at the time of that record.

According to Dr. Randolph A. Malone, John's name is "Melen" in records. He is noted almost as early as Daniel Malone a short distance away in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. On May, 1667, he is noted there witnessing the will of Hugh Kinsey.

Dr. Randolph mentions a John Malone in the same generation as Danial Malone, but does not comment on a possible relationship. He states that, "It is of interest that many early Virginians were attracted to land in Maryland when it began to be colonized in the period 1634 to 1700. John Malone left his will in Anne Arundel County, MD, probated April 13, 1676, in which he left legacies to Sarah Cole and to John Wilmoth, both familiar family names to southern Malones.

John Malone was born Sep 14, 1778, according to a family Bible published in 1846. This Bible was in the possession of Mrs. Lem Owens of Malone, AL, in 1953. The 1850 census gives his place of birth as Virginia. However, he appears to have grown up in Rutherford Co. NC, and married Gracie Eaves there in 1800. Gracie was probably the daughter of Burrell Eaves and Issa Malone. John and Gracie lived in SC for several years and at least two of their children were born there, Spencer,in 1812, and Robert Lewis. The county is unknown. By 1817 or so, the family had moved to Jasper Co. GA. In January 1818, John bought half of Lot 74 in the 17th District, with Benjamin Malone as witness (Jasper Co. DB 8-357). In December 1825 he bought additional land from Benjamin Cook (DB A-447). John was on the 1820 census in Jasper adjacent to Samuel W. Jackson, his son-in-law. In 1827, John won Lot 130 in District 4 of Coweta Co. in the Land Lottery. By 1830, he had moved to Butts Co. GA, and in March 1830 he was administrator of the estate of John Malone, Jr., thought to be his son (Butts Co. DB B-211). John Sr. was on the 1830 census in Butts Co. By 1833, John had moved to Meriwether Co. GA. In October 1833, he bought the west half of Lot 9 in the 8th District of Meriwether Co. from Samuel W. Jackson, with Jones Malone among the witnesses (Meriwether DB C-286). In 1835, he bought an additional 50 acres of an adjacent lot (DB D-76). Later that same year he sold this 50 acres (DB D-281). And in 1850 he sold the land he had purchased in 1833 to James Moreland (DB S-113). John and Gracie were on the 1840 and 1850 censuses in Meriwether Co. She apparently died in the 1850's. John is alone on the 1860 census there, aged 82. No estate records have been found for John. John and Gracie are thought to have had at least seven sons and a daughter. Of these, Lavinia, Spencer, Robert Lewis, and Ledford Bayles are known from family sources. Jones lived adjacent to John in both Jasper and Meriwether, witnessed deeds, etc., and so is thought to have been a son. John Jr.'s death was mentioned in the Ledford B. Malone family Bible, and John Malone Sr. was the administrator of his estate in Butts Co. Burwell's death was also mentioned in the L. B. Malone Bible, and he was living in Jasper in 1827 in the same militia district as John Sr., and was also living near Jones Malone in 1830 Pike Co. Also, Gracie's father's name was Burwell. William B. Malone's death is mentioned in the L. B. Malone Bible, and there is no further information on him. John and his sons ran a blacksmith's shop in Greenville.

Had dealings with "Col. Bolling, Col. Hardyman, and Maj. Wynn", as is evidenced by the list of his debts (see below).

Born: in Charles City Co, VA
Married:
Died: after 1713.

Parents: maybe Daniel Malone and Mary (Harrison?)
Wife: Susan A. Floraday

Signed: Susan A. Floraday, Daniell Mallone.
Susan Floriday, relict of Daniell Malone, dec'd, returned above account and it was recorded (Prince George County, Virginia Wills & Deeds 1710-1713) So- who is Susan?? Could FLOWERDAY be a variation of FLOWERDIEU??

Much information Malone information is based on Randolph Malone's Malones and Allied Families, with thanks especially to Randolph Malone and also to James Crawford Woodyard.

Daniel MALONE and wife Mary (HARRISON?)

He is the most likely candidate for progenitor of the Malone family in America. Court records of Justice Robert Wynne show Daniel in Charles City Co, VA by 1665; he was shown to be about 22 years old.

In 1679 was shown as a defendant in a civil suit with Eusebias King, noted in Court Orders 3 times in winter and spring of 16790. Shown as a land owner in 1718.

Born: between 1642-3 in County Westmeath, Ireland
Died: by 8/3/1688

Mary (Harrison) - Along with Christopher Harrison, "Mary Malone" witnessed an 1675 affidavit made by Rebecca Harrison in Charles City County. What is that relationship? Does that indicate Mary was a Harrison? She most likely remarried after Daniel's death, to John Raine by 4/1688.

Their children probably were:

1. Robert Malone was probably a teenager when his mother remarried in 1688.

"Robert Mallone, an orphan, and with consent of his father-in-law John Raine, chooses Samuel Tatem his guardian and promises (to) allow the orphan at the end of his term, the usual things, and to use his utmost endeavor to cure his head." In 1694, received 200 pounds of tobacco bounty for killing wolves.

Robert's children might have been:

Isham Malone (b. ca 1718; m. Judith Cole and they lived in Lunenburg Co, VA, later went to NC; d. 1815 NC),

Robert Malone (m. Mary Harrison on 9/12/1728, Stepney Parish, Somerset Co.-now Wicomico Co, MD; was back in VA by 1738); deeded an Amelia Co, VA plantation to Isham Malone in 1745),

maybe Daniel Malone,

William Malone (b. 1730 VA; d. 1826, Clarke Co, GA).

2. Daniel Malone II (born about 1675 in Charles City Co, VA and Died after 1713). He married Susan A. FLORADAY:

Shown on the 1704 Quit Rent rolls for 100 acres in Prince George Co, VA. He was living on the south side of the James River in the area that became Prince George County 1700. He had dealings with "Col. Bolling, Col. Hardyman, and Maj. Wynn", as is evidenced by the list of his debts (see below).

Daniel married Susan Floraday. Their known child: Mary Malone, and their probable children:

Nathaniel Malone (m. Mary Wynne, daughter of Thomas Wynne and Agnes Stith),

William Malone (m. Anne Tucker?),

George Malone,

Daniel Malone (m. Mary Busby),

Michael Malone.

After her husband died, on 7/15/1713 Susan (A.) Floraday signed the list of Daniel' s debts:
To Col. Bolling, Col. Hardyman, Thomas Simmons, Maj. Wynn, John Ellerson, Mr. Epes, William Ramey, George Pasmore, James Lodge, Richard Mones, Joshua Lessenby, Robert Bynetree, William Epes, Jr., John More, to total £15/15/4 [%C2%A315, 15 shillings, 4 pence].

Signed: Susan A. Floraday, Daniell Mallone.

Susan Floriday, relict of Daniell Malone, dec'd, returned above account and it was recorded (Prince George County, Virginia Wills & Deeds 1710-1713).

Daniel MALONE and Susan FLORADAY

Note: this is as near as I can figure but unproved. If Daniel is not my forepersons, then Robert and his wife were (see above)

Daniel and Susan's children probably were:

1. Mary Malone. She is the only known child. Could it be that she married George Booth??

2. Nathaniel Malone, born between 1675-81 in Charles City Co, VA. Married Mary Wynne, daughter of Thomas Wynne and Agnes Stith, about 1690. Their children: Phoebe Malone, Courtney Malone, Mary Malone, William Malone (b. ca 1703 VA; marred Ann Booth about 1717; d. 1775-87 Dinwiddie Co, VA), Thomas Malone (m. Millicent Chappelle?; d. after 1807), Nathaniel Malone (b. ca 1712; m. Christian Linnington; d.12/18/1758 Sussex Co, VA), Daniel Malone, Drury Malone, Frances Malone (m. Joseph Harper), Amey Malone (unmarried; left a mulatto in her father's will and the care of her younger sisters), Mary Malone (not of age in 1732), Courtney Malone. Nathaniel Malone died about 1731-2 in Surry Co, VA.

3. William Malone, born ca 1670-85 VA. Was a land owner in Surry Co, VA by 1718. Married Ann -?. They lived near Nathaniel Malone and adjacent to Christopher and Nathaniel Robertson. Their children: William Malone, Jr. (m. Mary Hill, daughter of Richard Hill and Hannah Briggs; owned land in Nottoway River Swamp in 1727; see the text of William's will), John Malone, Elizabeth Malone, Sarah Malone, Anne Malone, Amey Malone, Hannah Malone, Mildred "Milley" Malone, Agnes Malone. Died 1745, Surry Co, VA. His land was divided between his two sons in his will, which was witnessed by Robert Wynne (son of Thomas Wynne and Agnes Stith). See the text of his will.

4. George Malone. Married Mary-?.
5. John Malone, Sr.
6. Daniel Malone, born between 1695-98 in Bristol Parish, Prince George Co, VA

In surveys by Robert Bolling is stated "99 acres for Daniel Malone on both sides of Jones Hole Swamp and the Reedy Branch"; Daniel was shown living there in 1717 near George Malone. Married Mary Busby, daughter of Thomas and Mary Busby, sister of Simon Busby (the elder Busby family lived near George Malone and left his daughter Mary one shilling in his will and land on Pond's Swamp to Simon), about 1717 on VA. Their known child: Mary Malone (b. 3/20/1719-20, Bristol Parish, Prince George Co, VA). It is also speculated that Daniel and Mary were parents of Simon Malone. Daniel Malone died in Prince George Co, VA.

7. Michael Malone

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nathaniel MALONE and Mary WYNNE

Husband: Nathaniel Malone

LifeNotes: He was granted 99 acres in 1715. Owned property adjacent to Jones Hole Swamp, a gift from his father-in-law Thomas Wynne and he is metioned in the deed. Also owned property in Sussex Co, and Surry Co, VA (part of earlier Charles City Co, VA). In 1712 he was arrested and fined £25 for dealing with the Tuscorora Indians.

Seems to have recovered his good name by 1715, because on 3/23/1715, Nathaniel Malone was granted 215 acres on both sides of Sappony Creek, beginning on the west side, adjacent to Thomas Thrower's land.

In 1717 Nathaniel was engaged to make peace with the Seneca. Thomas Wynne, his father-in-law was also an interpreter for Indian affairs.

In 1718 Nathaniel was contracted by the Saponies to purchase back a Saponie woman who had been taken captive by "some forreign Indians"; he was to be paid 120 buck skins. A "down-payment" of 90 skins had been paid when the woman died. the "Great Men of the Saponie" wanted their skins back and Nathaniel had to appear in court to answer their complaints; he was ordered to return the skins.

Nathaniel Malone was business partners with his neighbor George Booth. On 9/19/1721 Nathaniel deeded 100 acres of his Sappony Creek land to George Booth. Mary Wynne signed her release to the land too. Booth was granted an additional 850 acres adjacent to Nathaniel on the southwest side of Stony Creek and on the north side of the Nottaway River, and on Sappony Creek adjacent to Thomas Thrower. On 3/29/1721 a survey shows Nathaniel and George owning 300 acres together on both sides of Turkey Creek.

Another neighboring family of the Malones and the Booths were the Jones. On 9/13/1723 John Jones Jr. was granted 95 acres on the north side of the Nottaway River extending along the south side of Sappony Creek, also bordering the land of Nathaniel Malone. William Jones was granted land on the other side of Nathaniel's property from George Booth, along both sides of Turkey Egg Creek north of the Nottaawy River and bordering land of Sloman Wynne and William Parham (William Parham had land granted on 7/9/1724).

Other neighbors were Robert Wynne, Mary Wynne's brother, living on Jones Hole Swamp. William Malone, Nathaniel's brother lived nearby too. William Moore, Nathaniel Robertson (whose son Drury Robertson married Winifred Malone, daughter of William Malone and Ann Booth. Roberston's son Nathaniel married Winifred Malone, daughter of William Malone, Nathaniel's brother), and Edward Winfield were living close by.

Born: between 1680-85 in Charles City Co, VA
Married: in VA
Died: about 1732 in Southwark Parish, Surry Co, VA. Will dated 1/1732, probated 3/21/1732., see the text.

Parents: probably Daniel Malone and Susan Floraday
Wife: Mary Wynne

LifeNotes: Her father Thomas Wynne gave the couple 98 acres "on ye south side of Jones Hole Swamp". Ross Malone tells us that in those days "swamp" meant and area around a slow-moving stream it was a valuable piece of land. That swamp appears on other pages on this site.

William MALONE and Ann BOOTH

Husband: William Malone

LifeNotes: Was of age in 1724. Lived in Prince George Co, VA (Prince George became Dinwiddie Co, in 1752).

First found in a deed between "William Tucker and Elisa his Wife of Prince George County of the one part and William Mallone the Son of Nathaniel Mallone of Surry County the other part. Witnessth that the said William Tucker and Elisa his Wife for and in consideration of the Sum of five Shillings.,," deed to William Mallone 143 acres "on the North Side of Stony Creek in the said county of Prince George." The land was described "Beginning at a Holly on the Bank of the said Creek in County LInes, thence East thirty degrees North two hundred poles to a corner, thence north five degrees West one hundred and twenty poles to a corner, thence west thirty degrees soutth hundred and ten poles to Stony Creek, thence down the vanes as it meanders to the beginning." Signed Wm. (X) Tucker and Elisa (X) Tucker. Wit: Geo. Hamelton Jun. Michael Wallis, Litt. Hardyman.

Neighbors were the Tuckers, Nathaniel Malone and George Booth, Sr. Received a gift of land from his father by way of a land swap with William Tucker. A Prince George County record of 7/11/1723, says "... 300 acres ordered to William Tucker from Nathaniel Malone, for whom it was surveyed ..." Was left no land in his father's will because he had received the land 8 years before hs father died. Known as William Malone of Bristol Parish, Prince George Co, VA (or Dinwiddie Co.)

In 5/1748, William began to amass his Brunswick Co, VA property for the apparent purpose of providing land for his children., On 5/5/1748, "William Malone of Bristol Parish, Prince George Co, for the love I have for my son-in-law Drury Robertson of St. Andrews Parish in Brinswick Co, deed 180 acres in St. Andrews Parish on the south side of the Meherrin River ..." Later a deed gift of a slave girl named Phan was given for "love, good will and affection to my son-in-law Drury Robertson."

On 7/29/1762, "William Malone of Dinwiddie Co. deeds to George Malone of Brunswick for 5 shillings "one negroe Toney" and acreage on the north side of Taylor's Creek; "the land on whicxh he now lives, the same that was granted to the said William Malone in Williamsburg."

On 1/1/1764 in a deed, "William Malone of Bristol Parish, Dinwiddie Co. deeds for affection to son Reuben Malone of Brunswick Co. all the land belonging to William Malone on the south side of Taylor's Creek, and one negro boy, Signed: William Malone and Ann (X) Malone."

Note that William's eldest son William did not receive a deed gift because by law the eldest son would inherit his father's lands in Bristol Parish.

Additional land deeded to William Malone of Bristol Parish in Dinwiddie Co, for £100 in current money, by John and Martha Williamson of Prince George County on 6/19/1753 355 acres bounded by Stony Creek and bounded partly by Stoney Creek at Pigg Quarter Gut, Mr. George Booth, John Curtis, the Dinwiddie line, the Duckpond Branch and the said Malone."

Note that the land of the other Wm. Malone (whose will was proved 1745) was never described as on Stoney Creek. That Wm. Malone lived at Southwark Parish on the Nottaway River, very close to this Wm. Malone.

Born: 1703 in Bristol Parish, Prince George Co, VA
Married: ca 1724 n Brunswick Co, VA
Died: 1774 in Dinwiddie Co, VA. Left a will that was destroyed in the Civil War.

Parents: Nathaniel Malone and Mary Wynne. See his Malone page and also see her Wynne page.
Wife: Ann Booth

LifeNotes: After William died, Ann was left with control of only 204 acres of William's extensive holdings. She is shown paying taxes on 204 acres in 1787-99 (after William's death), then in 1799-1800 William Pettipool paid taxes on 100 acres conveyed to him by Ann Malone. From 1787-1790 Richard Graves paid taxes on "Carter's 300 acres and Loyd's 159 acres, conveyed by Ann Malone."

Born: about 1720 Surry Co, VA

  • George Booth Malone, born 12/2/1737 in VA. Left 40 pounds by his grandfather George Booth. On 7/29/1762, his father gave him a slave Toney and acreage on Taylor's Creek in Brunswick Co, VA. He was a witness to a gift deed from his father to his brother Rueben; that land was also on Taylor's Creek. Was a Revotionary War soldier. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Daniel Malone I is this southern Malone family's apparent earliest known Virginia ancestor. [1, 2, 3] We know very little about him or his immediate descendants because most Charles City County records were destroyed in 1862 by McClelland's Union Army in the Civil War. What few records are available reveal the following:

Daniel Malone I is first recorded in Charles City County at a court in Westover on 2-1-1665 giving a deposition to the court justice Robert Wynne, who is also a Malone ancestor. In this deposition Daniel is noted to be "aged 22 years or thereabouts," making his birthdate about 1643. [4] The next Malone noted in extant records occurs ten years later in 1675 when "Mary Maloone" and Christopher Harrison witnessed an affidavit made by Rebecca Harrison. [5] Because no other Malones are mentioned besides these two in Charles City County until the early 1690's, and no other Mary Malone is noted in records until 40 years later in 1717, [6] it is assumed Daniel and Mary Malone were husband and wife. The next record of Daniel Malone is again found in Charles City Co., VA in 1679 when "Dan'l. Malone" is a defendant in a civil suit with Eusebias King, noted in Court Orders three times in the winter and spring of 1679. [7] Daniel would have been about 36 years old at this time.

Daniel Malone I was dead by 8-3-1688 and his wife remarried. At a court on that date, "Robert Mallone, an orphan, and with consent of his father-in-law John Raine, chooses Samuel Tatem his guardian, who promises (to) allow the orphan at the end of his term, the usual things, and to use his utmost endeavor to cure his head." [8] (We must remember that in Colonial records of that era "father-in-law" was also used to mean "stepfather.") [2 p. 7] Robert's head must have healed, because later in the 1694 rcords he received from the Charles City Co. Court 200 lbs of tobacco for killing wolves in 1694. In 1701/2 in Charles City Co., William Malone, Sr. and Daniel Malone II are noted as being in the Charles City County Militia, [9] and this must be the same Daniel Malone listed in Prince George County Quit Rolls in 1704, and William Malone, Sr. listed in Surry County records in the early 1700's. DANIEL MALONE I SONS (Documented)

The sons of Daniel Malone I, (born 1643 [1a] and died 1688 [2]) would be in that generation of Malone men that were born from about 1665 - 1685. Since Daniel Malone I was the only known Malone immigrant in that area, we must assume, without absolute documentary proof, that they were his sons. Unfortunately, McClellan's Union forces destroyed nearly all of the Charles City County, Dinwiddie County and Prince George County, VA records. What few remain, plus Surry County, VA records support this hypothesis. Charles City County was the original home of this Malone family, being an original shire, formed in 1634. By 1700, the area where the sons of Daniel Malone I are found is in a corner where Surry County, (formed in 1652), Charles City County and Prince George County, (formed from Charles City County in 1700) all join. This area was on the south side of the James River, and although three counties are involved, they join in a small area where the settlements of Daniel Malone I's sons are found.

There were five men who fit into this category: William Malone, Sr., Nathaniel Malone, Sr., Daniel Malone II, George Malone and Robert Malone. These men, in addition to their similar ages and locations, have other things in common that indicate they are sons of Daniel Malone I and brothers. Their properties were within a mile or two of each other. They were all intimately associated with the Wynne family, and with each other. They, along with the Wynne family witnessed deeds and wills for each other, and act usually reserved for relatives and closest friends.

1. William Malone, Sr. lived in the Surry County portion, and was in the Charles City Militia in 1702, indicating he had reached adult age at that time, along with his brother Daniel Malone II. [1] All deeds relating to him have the common descriptions of being on the north side of the Nottoway River, Southwest Swamp, and being adjacent to the Robertson family. [3, 4 are examples] This property was a short but distinct distance from his brother Nathaniel Malone, Sr. Only the property of Robert Wynne separated these two men.

2. Nathaniel Malone, Sr. lived on land bordering in both Surry and Prince George County, (the Prince George portion later became Dinwiddie County when it was formed in 1752). His land covered a huge area. Waterways in his property descriptions include the north side of the Nottoway River, Sapponey Creek, Stoney Creek, Turkey Egg Creek, Reedy Branch and Jones Hole Swamp. [5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 are examples] Nathaniel Malone's adjacent neighbors included George Booth, Robert Wynne, William Tucker, Daniel Malone II, William Tucker.

3. Daniel Malone II owned property on Jones Hole Swamp, as did his brother Nathaniel Malone, Sr. [9, 10, 11 are examples] He was probably the oldest of the four brothers, since he is noted owning land in 1704 in Prince George County. [12] He is also listed as being in the Militia in 1702. [1] Not only was Daniel Malone II associated with Nathaniel Malone, Sr. by owning adjacent property on Jones Hole Swamp, [9, 10] he is also connected to George Malone through the William Harrison and Thomas Busby families. George Malone was married to Mary Harrison, daughter or granddaughter of William Harrison, whose family were connected to the Thomas Busby family, mentioned in William Harrison's will. [14] Daniel Malone II's son Daniel Malone III married Mary Busby, daughter of Thomas Busby. Daniel Malone III signed off with his mother on the deceased Daniel Malone II's debts in 1713. [13, 15] Daniel Malone III, as noted, married Thomas Busby's daughter Mary Busby. [13, 15] These footnoted records show all these family relationships, and show how close by both location and relationships they were.

4. George Malone lived in the south side of the James River in Prince George County, in close proximity to the William Harrison and Thomas Busby families as well as his brothers. He was of age and married at least by 1712 and probably much before. He had the connections to Daniel Malone II as described above. Note in these footnotes his close invovlement with the Harrison family: [14, 16, 18]

5. Robert Malone shows records early, only in Charles City County. He is noted to be the son of Daniel Malone I because in 1688 Daniel's wife Mary had remarried at Daniel Malone I's death to Mr. Raine, and Robert Malone is shown as his step-son in an orphan's record for apprenticeship. This record is dated 1688 when Robert was most likely a young teenager -- old enough to leave home and be apprenticed, but not yet of legal adult age. [19] He did live to be an adult, since he is noted in 1694 being paid, along with Joshua Wynne, for killing wolves. [20] Nothing more is known of Robert Malone.
