About Daniel Yauch

ACCIDENT NO. 18. — May 3rd, A. D. 1906, Calumet Branch of the Calumet and Hecla Mine, Daniel Yauch. This accident occurred at the 52nd level No. 5 shaft Calumet, resulting in the death of Daniel Yauch a miner.

Inquest held by Coroner Fisher .

Axel Anderson being duly sworn, testified as follows: “I work at the 52nd level No. 5 shaft, Calumet. I know Daniel Yauch. He was my partner. I was working with him at the time of the accident. We examined the ground when we first went down and pinched down everything that was loose. Everything looked allright. We started a hole and got a six-foot drill in. Then another party wanted to blast a “fitchered” hole, and we all went down. When we came up again, I came first and brought up a couple of drills on my shoulder. Dan said everything was allright and went over and turned on the air and started the drill. He was sitting on a plank and the drill had been going about two minutes when the rock fell and it struck him. He said: “I am hurt.” I shut off the air and hollered to the other party and they came up and helped to get him out. The accident happened about ten o'clock. We pinched the ground down between 7 and 8 o'clock. He lived about five minutes after he got hurt. We pinched everything and both of us thought everything was allright.”

Victor Ecklund testified as follows: “I work for the Calumet and Hecla at the 52nd level No. 5 shaft, Calumet. The same place as Yauch was working last night. We examined the same piece of ground yesterday morning and pinched down everything we could, and we theught it safe and sound to work under. We worked there all day and not a piece as big as my finger fell all day. Last night before we left we blasted a couple of holes on the outside of the posts. I could not say how it looked after we blasted. I don't think our blast could have affected the piece of ground that fell. We examined that piece three or four times during the day but it was no different from what it was in the morning, the same all day.”

Verdict of the Jury: "That said Daniel Yauch came to his death on the 3rd day of May A. D. 1906, at the 52nd level, south of No. 5 shaft, Calumet Branch of the Calumet and Hecla Mine, by an accidental fall of vein rock.”

Daniel Yauch, about 60 years old, of Calumet, died by a piece of falling rock on Thursday night at the Calumet and Hecla Mine, where he was one of the oldest employees of the mine. He is survived by six children- Daniel, Jr; William; Rose; Jacob; Carrie and Edla. He was one of the pioneers of the copper country. The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon at the German Lutheran Church, Calumet. Burial will be at Lake View Cemetery, Calumet.
