About Darius Chase
Darius Chase was a restorer of oil paintings (Deyo's History of Barnstable County) son of Job Chase and Polly Eldredge (same history as well as Harwich VRs). His father was son of early settler, also Job Chase, both of whom had large families in that town. The date and place of his marriage to Mary was noted among the procedings of their divorce in 1852 in which she was only referred to as Mary Chase. The court records stated that after their marriage they lived in Harwich and then moved to various locations, probably because of his work. Darius moved to Maine to file for divorce and Mary was living in Weston when she counter filed. The proceedings were part of a google book on cases before the Massachusetts Supreme Court because of the question of whether there were charges that met requirements for a divorce in Massachusetts. The divorce was finally granted in October 1852, and Mary was awarded custody of their children and alimony and was said to be last known of Palmer, MA, by the time things concluded. Darius was in Harwich on the 1880 census married second to Annie Merryman of Maryland, with whom he had Darius and Lilla, both born in Baltimore. Annie's full name from her death record was Sarah Annie Merryman daughter of John Merryman b. Baltimore and Sally Enson b. Maryland. Darius and Annie are buried at Pine Grove Cemetery in West Harwich on the same lot as their son Darius and his wife Lucy. Also with them are their daughter Annie and her husband Dr. David Ginn.
