Obituary for David Chalmers (Newspaper), 'Bruce Herald', "Obituary; Thursday 24 Sep 1925. David H. Chalmers: aged 87 years. The ranks of the earliest settlers of Tokomairiro are sadly becoming depleted with the passage of time, and another severance in the link of the present generation with the hardy old pioneers who braved the trials and tribulations in the early settlement of Otago, has occurred with the death of Mr David Heron Chalmers which occurred at his eldest daughters residence at "Round Hill" Palmerston last Tuesday. The deceased gentleman had long passed his allotted span of life, having reached the advanced age of 87 years, but was hale and hearty until his final illness, which was of brief duration. The late Mr Chalmers was a native of Fifeshire, Scotland, where he was born in 1838. When a young man, twenty years of age, he accompanied his parents and other members of his family in their emigration to New Zealand, sailing in the ship "John(sic) Henderson" which arrived in Port Chalmers in January (sic) 1958. The Parents and family immediately proceeded to Tokomairiro district, taking up land at "Rosebank", (near Milton) also in Canada Reef district. Mr Chalmers worked on the parents original holding, and in 1864 married Miss Rebecca Black, who was a native of Eniskillen, Ireland, and who predeceased her husband twenty-two years ago. The late Mr Chalmers followed farming pursuits until advancing age caused his retirement from active labours, and he had led a retired life for several years past, residing with members of the family. He was possessed of a cheery disposition, dearly loved a 'crack' anent olden times on which he retained great knowledge of the stirring times of the digging, etc., etc. He also had no small reputation as a weather prophet, being a close student of astrology, and climate influences. The late Mr Chalmers is survived by a family of nine, also thirty grandchildren, and eighteen great-grand children, and the community sympathises with them in the death of such a highly-esteemed citizen. There are also one sister, and two brothers surviving. The funeral took place this afternoon, when the mortal remains were interred at Fairfax Cemetery, the funeral service being conducted by Captain Mathieson, Salvation Army Officer, in the work of which service Mr Chalmers had long maintained an interest. One who had known the late Mr Chalmers intimately for several years speaks of him as kind-hearted, generous-spirited, and possessed of a wide fund of information. One of the old school, he put character before fortune, and showed an independent spirit which the younger generation would find hard to emulate. Note. The immigrant ship was the 'Robert Henderson' and she arrived in February 1858."
