About David Church, of Watertown and Killingly

There were a number of different David Churches. This is the son of Garrett Church, both from Watertown, Massachusetts, not to be confused with a different David Church of Marlborough, Massachusetts.

Garrett's David was born in "Watertown, Mass., 1657, married there Mary and had John 1687 and Sarah 1689. In 1708-9 he went to Killingly, Conn., of which place he was a patentee and town clerk for twenty years. In 1738 he deeded land to his well beloved son" John and mentions his grandson John. The grandson married Amy Winter and after his death his son, also John, went with his mother to Fort "Western (Augusta), Me.

The cessation of children after the second child has led to the supposition that Garrett's David lost his wife, and the genealogists say that he married again, another Mary , but there is no evidence of the fact. The records of Killingly have the death of Mary widow of David Church, 17 Dec, 1751. He had seven great-grandchildren born in Killingly to "John and Amey Church."

Thus the lives of the two Davids (David of Watertown and Killingly and David of Marlborough) run parallel from the year 1708 or 9, he of Marlborough having four children in seven years, 1710 to 17, during which years the son of Garrett rose from 57 to 64 years of age. One family moved west, the other east.

David Church b.c. 1657 in Watertown, MA and died in Killingly, Windham, Connecticut after 1738; he was 80. He married Mary ---- (last name unknown) before 16 Jun 1686 when he was 28.

See below for children. In addition to John and Sarah who are documented in the history of Watertown, one recent researcher believes he had Mary, David and Elizabeth.

"Extract from "Ancestors of Ezra Bliss Church of Ferrisburgh, Vermont" by Lorraine McElroy Peirce (1964):

David Church was born on September 1, 1657 in Watertown, Massachusetts, the youngest child of Garrett and Sarah Church. His wife Mary was admitted to the church there on November 6, 1687, the same day as their son, John, was baptized. Their daughter, Sarah, was baptized there on October 6, 1689. David was an innkeeper in Watertown and is also referred to as a tailor. No record of his marriage has been found.

In 1708 David moved from Watertown to Killingly, Windham County, Connecticut. David and Mary were admitted to the Killingly Church on September 2, 1716. He was an original Patentee of the Town and its first town clerk, an office he is reported to have held for 20 years. On July 8, 1710 David Church was one of 19 citizens of Woodstock and Killingly who petitioned the Town of Providence to lay out a road for their use into Providence because "Wee have great occasion to Come to your Town in an Ordinary way and shall have more and More." David Church signed this petition as Town Clerk.

In 1738 David deeded land to his son John, which is recorded in the Killingly Land Records Book 4, Page 255. In this deed, David, then 82 years old, gives for "love" etc. to his son John Church a twenty-five acre lot in Killingly bounded on the north by land of Joseph Leavens, Esq., on the East by Common Land, on the south by land of his grandson John Church and on the west by the River. He also gives to his son John all of his right in the Second Division of land in Killingly and in any subsequent divisions as well as any interest he might still have had in the Common Lands. He then goes on to give his son John whatever right he may still have in the Town of Killingly in both the Narraganset and Canaday grants of the General Assembly of Massachusetts. Then the deed reads: "also all of ye Estate Reight Title & Interst which I have in the town of Watertown in ye county of Middlesex in the province of massachusetts bay in New England Descending to be in Right of my honored father Garrett Church..." This deed is unusual in that it mentions four generations in a single document.

This deed was not recorded until 1744, which may mean that was when David died. In any event, David died before December 17, 1751 when Mary Church died in Killingly and was referred to as the widow of David.

Another View of David Church of Watertown, "Garrett's David"

According to the "History of Watertown" David Church had but two children - John and Sarah. But evidence uncovered recently by Col. Maxwell Emerson of Memphis, Tennessee, and recorded in "Some Descendants of Thomas Croswell" (1976) indicate[s] he had five children, as follows:

  1. David, Jr. b. ca. 1681 m. Mary Howe Children: Adonijah, Noah, Ephraim (THIS IS VERY DOUBTFUL)
  2. Mary, b. ca. 1684 m. (1) Adam Martin (2) Isaac Amsden
  3. John, bapt. Nov 6, 1687, d. 1747/8 m. (1) Elizabeth Evans (2) Susanna Morris
  4. Sarah, bapt. Oct 6, 1689 m. Simon Maynard
  5. Elizabeth, b. ca. 1693 m. (1) Benjamin Leavens (2) Uriah Hosmer."
