Genealogy
Biographical Summary by Stephen R Johnson
David Dalrymple was born on 27th August 1719 in Edinburgh the son of Sir Hugh Dalrymple, Lord Drummore and Ann Horn of Westhall. His father was a Senator of the Sessions Court in Edinburgh and he was the great grandson of Sir James Dalrymple, 1st Viscount Stair.
David studied law and by 1748 was apppointed Deputy-Sheriff of the City of Aberdeen. It was there that he met Jean Aberdein, the daughter of Alexander Aberdein of Cairbulg. David married Jean at quite a late stage in his life on 21st March 1761.
David became Procurator to the Church of Scotland - The Procurator to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland is the principal legal advisor to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland a post which he held for several years. he was appointed Senator of the Court of Sessions on 10th July 1777. He took the title Lord Westhall a tribute to his mother Ann.
David's wife Jean died on 23rd April 1780 at the tragically young age of 40. David died on 26th April 1784 in his 65th year. As you can see they had many children. The family was plunged into crisis after David's death which meant his surviving children were now orphans.
My 4 x great grandfather John Dalrymple was 18 months old when his mother Jean died. He was 5 1/2 when his father died. A letter from his father's brother General Robert Dalrymple-Horn-Elphinstone of Horn and Westhall - in support of John's application for a British Army commission in 1793 to Lord Amhurst spoke of the crisis that the family had been left in a reference to Lord Westhall's death. John 16 years old and was living at the time with his cousin Earl Stair at his residence in Sussex Gardens, London near Hyde Park.
