David Danford (1826-1877) and wife, Miriam, came to Lawrence County from Noble County, Ohio. David's ancestor, Peter Danford hailed from England and settled in New Jersey. David and Miriam had a son William H. Danford (1854-1935, who married Cordelia Thompson Holderby. Her parents were Abner Holderby (1805-1895 and Jane Thompson Holderby, who were donors of land for Marshall University in Huntington, WV. William and Cordelia's children were Averil, schoolteacher; G. R. (Grophia), building contractor in Huntington, West Virginia; Quincy, Forest, Lawrence, carpenters; Denny, carpenter in Miami, Florida; and Maggie Hayes, Deming, New Mexico.
Grophia Danford (1884-1976) and wife Lida (Hesson) Danford (1884-1988), were both born and reared in Lawrence County. They were married in 1903 and had 7 children: (1) Collis, retired high school teacher and principal in Lawrence County, also taught at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, TX and was a building contractor there. He married Thelma Gilpin and had two children, Lucy Owens of Dallas and Dana C. or Corpus Christi. Thelma died in 1975 and Collis married Mary Willis who died in 1978. He than married Magarette Reifschlaeger and lives in Corpus Christi.
(2)Garnet Danford, retired from Kroger Company, married Ernest (Nick) Nance who died in 1984. They had one son, M. Gene Nance of Greasy Ridge Road, Lawrence County.
(3)Edwin A. Danford, pediatrician in Corpus Christi, died in 1969. He married Wilba Walton who still lives in Corpus Christi.
(4) M. Beatrice Danford, beautician, married Paul L. Dillon who died in 1989 in Friendswood, TX, where they lived. They had three children: Connie Sue Hutchison Haygood of Galveston, TX; Paul Danford Dillon of Pearland, TX and Linda Kay Dillon of Huntsville, Alabama.
(5) Dorothy Danford, retired Purchasing Agent of Marshall University, married Tude Smith who died in 1963, they had one son, Keith Edwin of Gallipolis, Ohio.
(6) Paul Russell Danford retired from Reynolds Metals, married Edna Riley who died in 1968. They had two children: Edwin of Corpus Christi, Texas and Joyce Ann Smith of Buffalo, New York. Russell is now married to Jo Giles and lives in Portland, TX.
(7) Hilda Danford, dental assistant, died in 1974 in Detroit. She was married to Don Pyles (deceased) and they had three children: Don Danford of Lake Worth, Florida; Susan of Detroit; and Ronnie of Columbus, Ohio.

The Hessons originated in Holland and Germany. The Hesson motto means "There is honor in the right path". Samuel Hesson (1809-1891) married Jane Lamp. Their son, George W. Hesson (1850-1910, married Melissa A. Harless, daughter of John C. Harless (1831-1865) and Eliza Hannah Lafon Harless, (1828-1911). In March of 1864, John Harless, who was fighting in the Civil War, wrote a letter to his daughter, Melissa, saying that if he lived through that battle, he would write again. She never heard again, and the letter has been preserved.
George W. Hesson and Melissa Harless married in 1873 and had 12 children: William A. (1874-), Willard (1876-1959), Rosa Dunfee (1877-1957), Maggie Pinkerman (1879-1953, Irvin G. (1881-1957), Lida Danford (1883-1988), Delbert (1885-1969), Charles (1887-1965), Lew (1889-1938), Harold (1891-1954, Earl (1894-1962), and Grace Danford (1895-1980).
