About David Dunstan [Convict "Atlantic" 1791]

David DUNSTAN (aka DENCHAM, DUNSTON, DENSHAM, DUNSHAM) was born 9/11/1766 Dunhideoch, Devon, England

David was convicted of stealing and sentenced to 7 years transportation. He arrived in Sydney Cove on 20/8/1791 on "Atlantic".

David married Mary MULLENDER on 17/8/1794 at Sydney City and had the following children

David died 5/12/1836 at Wilberforce and was buried on 7/12/1836 at St Johns Cemetery.


David Dunston - pioneeer settler in the Hawkesbury.

Arrived in Australia 1791 aboad the 'Atlantic'.

The Dunston family was one of the first in the Hawkesbury. Upon arrival in in 1791 David, wife Mary Mullender & children settled on a land grant in Wilberforce in 1804. A carpenter by trade he built his home there.

David Dunstan arrived on the 'Atlantic' in 1791. Mary Mullender, who became his wife, had arrived in the 'Lady Juliana' in 1790. He settled on a grant of land of ninety acres at Wilberforce in November 1804. He was employed as a carpenter building the Ebenezer Church. He spelt his name with an 'O' , but his eldest son used an 'A'.

David Dunstan had four sons, David, Stephen, John and James, who were farmers in the Wilberforce and Kurrajong districts.

David was a carpenter from Bramford, Speke, Exeter.

On 14 April 1790 he was convicted of stealing 22/6 value of carpenters tools. He was sentenced in Devon to 7 years transportation and was imprisoned in The Hulks (11 months on the hulk "Portsmouth" and Exeter Gaol) before sailing on the "Atlantic".

The "Atlantic" left Plymouth on 27 March 1791 and sailed into Sydney Cove on 20 August 1791 as part of the Third Fleet.

In 1804 he was given a grant of 90 acres at Mulgrave Place; in 1825 he was granted a further 60 acres at Kurrajong; and in 1831 was granted 100 acres at Liberty Plains.

David Dunstan did carpentry work on the Ebenezer Church at Portland Head, now one of the oldest churches in Australia still used for regular worship.

He became a farmer at Wilberforce and also a respected member of the Windsor community.

David DENSHAM (also known as Dunstan/Dunster) born c 1764 was a carpenter and came from Bramford Speke Exeter. He was sentenced to 7 years transportation for stealing carpenters' tools in 1790. He was imprisoned in The Hulks before sailing on the "Atlantic" (Third Fleet) which left Plymouth on 27/3/1791. The "Atlantic" sailed into Sydney Cove on 20/8/1791 after a voyage of almost 5 months.

In 1794 he married Mary Mullender (a convict from the "Lady Juliana"). They had 6 children, two of whom married into the Turnbull family of Portland Head.

In 1804 he was made a grant of 90 acres at Mulgrave Place, a further 60 acres at Kurrajong in 1825, and 100 acres at Liberty Plains in 1831. He became a respected member of the Windsor community and did carpentry work on the Ebenezer Church at Portland Head, now one of the oldest churches in Australia still used for regular worship.

His misfortune of being transported in 1791 has certainly proved to be beneficial to his many descendants who are now spread over much of Australia.
