David was an early pioneer in the L.D.S. Church. In 1836 he received a patriarchal blessing from Joseph Smith Sr., and was ordained as a High Priest at the final conference held by Joseph Smith Jr. in Nauvoo on April 6th, 1844 (a few months before Joseph Smith Jr. was murdered).

David Foote was born on August 7th, 1768 in Harwinton, Litchfield county Connecticut, to Ebenezer Foote and Rebecca Barker. Ebenezer was a soldier of the American Revolution, he died while in the army June 1778, when David was only ten years old. David is a descendant of Nathaniel Foote who settled America from England in 1633. David married Irene Lane, a daughter of Nathan Lane and Dorcas Muscroft, Nathan Lane was a soldier of the American Revolution and a descendant of William Lane who settled America in 1635 from England. David and Irene had 12 children including: Laura, Betsey, Nancy, Melinda, Irene, Dorcas, Almira, Clarissa, David, George Lane, Warren and Harrison.

David passed away on August 22nd, 1845.

David is also a descendant of Reverend John Lathrop who settled America from England in 1644. Rev. John Lathrop is the ancestor of many early leaders in the L.D.S Church, including: Joseph Smith Jr., Hyrum Smith, Wilford Woodruff, Oliver Cowdery, Parley P. Pratt, and Orson Pratt. (making all these people David Foote's cousins).

David Foote has a detailed biographical sketch shown in 1901 L.D.S. Biographical Encyclopedia Vol.1 by Andrew Jenson, as does his son Warren. David is also named in the pages of 1849 Descendants of Nathaniel Foote by Nathaniel Goodwin & 1907 Foote Family Genealogy by Abram W. Foote.

David and his wife Irene's lives are very well documented in the Journals of Warren Foote (their son). The Warren Foote Journals are currently stored at the Church History Library in Salt Lake City.
