When David Hatfield, Sr was born in 1723 his father, Abraham, was 28 and his mother, Margaret, was 30. He married Susanna Clark about 1746, in Essex County, New Jersey. They had 9 proven children during their marriage: William; Susanna; David, the Elder; Joseph; John; Abraham; Margaret, the Elder; Margaret, the Younger; and David, Jr or the Younger. David, Sr died in September 1801 having lived a long life of 78 years.

During his lifetime, David was probably a tanner, as was his father, Abraham Hatfield, Sr. David was a man of considerable means and position; he held a great deal of property in greater Elizabethtown, in the sections now known as Rahway. He served as an Elder of Rahway Presbyterian Church, once located on St. Georges Avenue in Rahway. Most notably, David was a Patriot, captured at Terrill's Tavern by the British and held a prisoner of war during June of 1776. He is mentioned in his father's will, written in 1742.

His own will was written in July of 1801, with an inventory made in October of the same year. It was proved in Elizabethtown, Essex, NJ February of 1802. It can be safely assumed his recorded death of the month of September is safe, but a guess. In his own will, his wife is not mentioned nor provided for by name or reference, so it can also be assumed that she had pre deceased him, or would soon be expected to be deceased. mentioned by name are only his five granddaughters and his son, David, Jr.
