OBITUARY.
DAVID KNIGHT. An old and much respected resident, a pioneer settler whose whole life had been passed in the Dominion, passed to his rest yesterday in the person of Mr David Knight, of Hunter street, Hawera. He had. suffered for twenty-five years from the results off an accident. When driving in a buggy a train crashed into the vehicle on the Main South Road crossing, and again thirteen years since from a serious accident at the railway station, when he was thrown from his horse and was partially paralysed on his right side. From this he never recovered, but despite, his injuries he continued to get about as usual until comparatively recently. Throughout and right to the last moments before his death he took a keen interest in current, affairs, and just before his death, which took place suddenly, he was discussing the wool market with one of his sons. Mr Knight was bom at the Lower Hutt in 1851, the youngest son of the late Mr and Mrs William Knight, who landed in. Port Nicholson -by 'the ship Duke of Roxburgh in January, 1840. One of a family of fourteen, his early years were spent in the infant settlement round Wellington. Later he -vvent to the Manawatu, where he managed a farm for the late Sir Jas Prendergast at Fitzherbert. In 1882 he .came to Taranaki and bought land at Oeo at the first land sales when the Plains were opened. There he bred pedigree Romney sheep, scoring many successes in the show ring, and acting, too as judge at several shows. Some years after he settled at Manaia, and there bred many racehorses of which the best known; was the thoroughbred mare Weka, a well-known galloper of those days. He; was successful in winning at different times; the Taranaki, Manawatu, Rangitikei and Egmont Cups. After a few years he settled in Hawera, where he lived until his death. He is survived by his widow and a family of ten; four, boys and six girls. : The daughters are Mesdames Dudley (Hawera), Finlay (Tauhahei), H; J. Rowe and: J.Lander (Tauranga), H. Stringer (Hunterville), F. Edwards (Hamilton) and the sons are , Messrs, P. G. (Tataraimaka), H. W. (Kapuni), F. O, (Matamata), and W.D. (Waiotahi). News of his death will be learnt with keen regret by many friends, and deep sympathy, in which we wish to join, will go out to his family.
