David Lindo was an orthodox Sephardi Anglo-Jewish communal worker, who was an important member of the Bevis Marks synagogue in London. He was an uncle of Lord Beaconsfield (Benjamin Disraeli) and he carried out Benjamin Disraeli's circumcision. David Lindo opposed the founders of the Reform movement in London. In 1838 he helped to found and became chairman of a society called "Shomere Mishmeret Akodesh," formed to resist all innovations and oppose Reform tendencies; but the Bevis Marks synagogue leaders ordered the dissolution of the society as likely to lead to disunion. Lindo had no less than eighteen children, eight of whom married into well-known Sephardic families. (JMM)
