About David Maggard

He was the son of Hans Maggard (Maggart), who was the immigrant. The family came from Bern, Switzerland around 1716 and settled in what became Lancaster County, PA. David had at least one sibling, a brother named Samuel Maggard (Maggart), whose descendants are well documented in the book, "Coming Down Cumberland," by Bud Phillips.

Members of this family often spelled their last name as "Maggart" or "Maggert."

The family were Mennonites, and they spoke German. Around 1720, Hans and his family left Pennsylvania and they migrated to what became Shenandoah County, VA. They lived along the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, between Elk Run and Hawksbill Run Creeks. This was where David grew up.

David married Margaret Mauck around 1741. On June 1, 1741, he acquired 300 acres along the north side of the South River, and he continued to buy land around the Shenandoah River for many years.

David could read and write, and he often took inventories and appraised estates. On March 19, 1771, he adopted Mary Hoffman, the daughter of his neighbor Nicholas Hoffman, who had died the year before. Mary's sister Elizabeth Hoffman was adopted by David's brother Samuel Maggard.

Mary Hoffman grew up in David and Margaret's home, and she later married their son Jacob.

David Maggard wrote his will on 12-23-1770, and he died five years later, in the spring of 1775. His will was probated on 5-25-1775 in Shenandoah County. His father-in-law Henry Mauck was one of the witnesses. In his will, David named his wife Margaret, and his eight children.

Their children:
1. Rudolph (born 1746 and died 10-12-1795 in Shenandoah County, VA);

2.David (born 1752 and died 1824 in Alleghany County, VA--married Susanna Long in 1775--they lived in Monroe County, VA);

3. Benjamin, known as "Bennie" (born 1755 and died December of 1805 in Shenandoah County, VA--married Elizabeth Judy on 9-29-1791 and married Susannah Pence on 5-2-1794);

4. John (born 1780 and died 4-8-1831 in Clark County, OH--married Elizabeth Eve Sellers on 7-25-1789);

5. Henry (born 1761 and died 1842 in Sullivan County, TN--married Margaret Gimmel in 1789);

6. Elizabeth (born 1764 and died 1830 in Rockingham County, VA--married Frederick Judy on 9-29-1788);

7. Jacob (born 1766 and died 1834 in Champaign County, OH--married Mary Hoffman on 3-26-1787); and

8. Daniel (born 1768 and married Margaret, known as "Peggy).

His will mentioned 30 head of cattle, and his land, and the fact that he wanted his estate divided up among his heirs.

His wife Margaret died around 1798.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Aug 11 2022, 23:30:03 UTC
