About David Milton Poe, Sr.

In the 1850 U.S. Federal Census for the Southern Division of Guilford County, North Carolina, dated October 5th, David Poe, 52, was listed with his wife Abigail (Wilson) Poe 52, and their younger children, David Milton Poe, Jr., 18, Phebe Emily, 14, Richard D., 11, and Thomas James Poe, 9 years old. David and Abigail had been married January 4, 1821, in Guilford County, North Carolina, and she was he daughter of John Wilson and Elizabeth A. Linthicum.

David was working as a laborer and his son David, Jr., was working as a farmer. Their older children were already married and living on their own including Lydia, born in 1821, William David, born in 1822, Elizabeth J., born in 1824, Sarah, born in 1826, Sandy Weston Poe, born in 1828, and Rebecca, born in 1833. David and Abigail had given birth to at least 10 children in a 20-year period.

Living next door was David and Abigail's older son William Poe, 26, and his wife, Eliza, 29, and two of her siblings, a sister, Martitia Chaplain, 14, and brother, Alpheus, 11. William was also working as a farmer. They were all born in Guilford County, North Carolina, except for Alpheus, who was born in Davidson County, North Carolina.

Living six homes away was David Poe's sister, Celia (Poe) Osborne, 51, and her husband, Thomas Osborne, 61, and their daughter, Mary Ann, 17, and Celia's sister, Rachel Poe, 40. Thomas was working as a farmer. Living a few homes away was Celia and Thomas Osborne's son, William, 30, and his wife Ruth, 28, and their children Mary Anne, 10, Eliza Ann, 8, Nancy E., 4, and Sarah M., 1 year old. William was working as a wagon maker.

David passed away in North Carolina in 1860, but Abigail lived another 28 years, and died at the old age of 90 on March 11, 1888, in Hiattville, Bourbon County, Kansas, which was where she was buried. However in the 1880 U.S. Federal Census for Virginia, Warren County, Iowa, Abigail was 82 years old and living with her son Thomas, 39, and his wife, Jane, 38, and their children, Samuel, 12, Lydia, 10, Abigail, 8, Ulysses, 6, Mary, 4, and John, 2 years old. Thomas was working as a farmer. He and his wife were born in North Carolina, but their first two children were born in Indiana, and the next four were born in Iowa. They later moved to Kansas sometime between 1884 and 1887 based upon the birth years of their last two daughters.

Living next door was Abigail's nephew, James Wilson, 44, and his wife, Maria, and their children, William, 21, George, 18, Frank, 17, John, 15, Fannie, 10, Mary, 8, Cora, 5, and James, Jr., 1 year old. James Sr. was working as a physician and a farmer. James was born in North Carolina, his wife in Indiana, and their children were all born in Iowa. This would indicate that James came to Indiana about 22 years earlier and not long afterwards they moved to Iowa, perhaps about 1858 or 1859. He was the son of Abigail's brother, Richard Wilson, and his wife Ruhama, who were listed in the 1850 census in Guilford County, North Carolina, as follows: Richard, 45, Ruhama, 38, and children, John, 16, James H., 14, William M., 12, Eunice, 9, Nathan E., 6, Richard A., 3, and also living with them was Diana Linthicum (probably one of Abigail's mother's relatives).

David and Abigail's son, David Milton Poe, born in 1832, also died at the age of 90 on August 14, 1922, due to chronic nephritis (kidney disease), and was buried in the Circle Grove Cemetery in Spiceland, Henry County, Indiana. His mother Abigail was buried in the Hiattville Cemetery in Hiattville, Bourbon County, Kansas.
