About David Ross
Settled in Margaree, Cape Breton Island in 1804 from the mainland in Hants County where he was born and lived. In Margaree, he originally lived on the Baddeck Road. The town where they settled became known as Rossville Margaree.
David Ross' will dated 1819, states; "Being very sick and weak, I give to my wife Elizabeth 100 Acres on the lot #10 and #12 to the east of Edward (Ross). To my daughters Janie, Mary, Margaret and Ann, 15 pounds at the time of their marriage. To daughter Sarah Carmichael 5 pounds. To my four sons, James, David, William and Jacob a lot of land joining James Dean to be divided between them equally. (Taken from Nova Scotia Wills Vol. A, MB 56, pages 50-51)
David Ross and his brother Edmund Ross shared their father's land acreage upon his death, according to his will.
In the 1818 Margaree Census, David Ross was 46 years old and had been in Cape Breton Island for 15 years - having come in from the Nova Scotia mainland.

In 1787, "Lands assigned to David Ross and other disbanded soldiers of the 32nd Regiment of Foot. Cape Breton NO 1 NSARM Film 15783. In 1811, Report of Crawley to McKinnin, Lot #10, consisting of 110 acres on the south side of the North East branch of the River Margaree. The 32nd Regiment of Scotland and the 46th Regiment of Nova Scotia were raised and active in the 1750s - during conflicts for supremacy in colonial North America. Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry.
In 1783, David's father willed his 600 acres of family land in Hants County to David and his brother Edmund, this land having been granted to John Ross in 1772.
