About David Smith
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/46951264/david-smith
David Smith, who came to Randolph County North Carolina before 1768, was born in North Farnham Parish, Richmond County Virginia in 1720, the son of William and Mary Smith. He was the oldest of three children of record-his brother William was born in 1724, brother Samuel in 1726. David's marriage to Ann was not recorded in the North Farnham Parish records, but the birth of their child William was recorded in 1743, Ann was most likely that daughter of John and Mary Bryant of the same parish and county, whose birth was recorded at North Farnham in 1723.
This Smith family likely migrated northwest into Frederick County, VA, perhaps after the birth of William, since there are no further birth entries for their family in the North Farnham Parish records. David Smith negotiated a lease for lives in 1749 in Frederick County, for the longest of the lives of David himself, his wife Ann and his son Alexander. He subsequently moved back across the Blue Ridge into Loudoun County, Virginia, where he negotiated another lease for lives Sept. 29, 1759, this time for the lives of David, Ann, Alexander and a second son David. Records in Loudoun place him there through 1765, after which he migrated to now, Randolph County; he was on the Rowan County Tax List of William Millikan for about 1768. Both the migration into the back country of Virginia and then to North Carolina was probably in the company of Bryant Kin, which family Jane Beekman describes in an article on that family published in Heritage of Randolph County II.
David and his sons Alexander, David Jr., Joseph, Bryant and John left significant land transactions, deeds and grants in Randolph County. David lived until at least 1803, when he executed a deed. An Smith was listed as a landowner on the 1803 Randolph County Tax List for Smiths district, but not on later lists. Her exact death date is unknown. While David left no will or estate papers in Randolh County, his brother, William died childless in Shenandoah County, Virginia in 1799 and left his estate to his wife Elizabeth and the residual to the children of his brothers David and Samuel. From William's will, the estate papers and a number of deeds in Shenandoah, David and Samuel's children are identified.
