David Joel Stern was an American businessman and lawyer who served as the fourth commissioner of the National Basketball Association. He started with the Association in 1966 as an outside counsel, joined the NBA in 1978 as General Counsel, and became the league's Executive Vice President in 1980. He became Commissioner in 1984, succeeding Larry O'Brien. He is credited with increasing the popularity of the NBA in the 1990s and 2000s.

Stern served on the Rutgers University Board of Overseers and was a Chair Emeritus of the Board of Trustees of Columbia University. He was also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

On October 25, 2012, Stern announced that he would step down as NBA commissioner on February 1, 2014, 30 years to the day after beginning his tenure as commissioner. His deputy, Adam Silver, was his successor. At the time of his departure, he was the NBA's longest-serving commissioner. Stern received the Olympic Order in 2012. On February 14, 2014, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced that Stern would be a member of its 2014 induction class. In 2016, he became a member of the FIBA Hall of Fame.

' (באנגלית: David Joel Stern;‏ 22 בספטמבר 1942 – 1 בינואר 2020) היה עורך דין יהודי-אמריקאי שהיה נציב (קומישנר) ליגת ה-NBA משנת 1984 ועד שנת 2014. נחשב בעיני רבים לאחד הנציבים המצליחים והמשפיעים בתולדות הספורט המקצועני בצפון אמריקה.

קורות חייו סטרן בילה את ילדותו בעיר טינק שבניו ג'רזי. בשנת 1963 סיים לימודי היסטוריה באוניברסיטת ראטגרס שבניו ג'רזי, ובשנת 1966 סיים לימודי משפטים באוניברסיטת קולומביה שבניו יורק. באותה שנה החל לעבוד במשרד עורכי דין שייצג את ליגת ה-NBA. בשנת 1978 מונה ליועץ המשפטי של הליגה, ובשנת 1980 מונה לסגן נשיא בכיר של הליגה. ב-1 בפברואר 1984 מונה לנציב הרביעי של הליגה, אחרי פרישתו של לארי או'בריין. באותה שנה התקבלו לליגה השחקנים מייקל ג'ורדן, צ'ארלס בארקלי, ג'ון סטוקטון והאקים אולאג'ואן.

בשנות ה-80, הגיעה הליגה בניהולו של סטרן לשיאים של רווחיות ופופולריות בכל העולם, בעיקר בזכות השחקנים הבולטים מייקל ג'ורדן, מג'יק ג'ונסון ולארי בירד. משחקי הליגה משודרים במעל 200 מדינות בכל העולם, וחברות בה 30 קבוצות - 29 מארצות הברית ואחת מקנדה. בשנת 1996 הוקמה ליגת הכדורסל המקבילה לנשים - ליגת ה-WNBA.

סטרן נחשב לנציב קפדן בענייני משמעת, והתנגד בתוקף להימורים על משחקי הליגה. בשנת 2005 אישר לקבוצות הליגה תקרת שכר גמישה של 49.5 מיליון דולר, במטרה להימנע מסכסוך שיוביל להשבתה של הליגה. הסכם פשרה זה עורר ביקורת מצד התומכים בהגבלת שכר השחקנים ובעידוד התחרותיות.

ב-1998 הונצח סטרן ביד לאיש הספורט היהודי במכון וינגייט, מוזיאון המנציח אנשי ספורט יהודיים שזכו להישגים יוצאי דופן.

ב-26 באוקטובר 2012 הודיע סטרן שיעזוב את תפקיד הנציב ב-1 בפברואר 2014, 30 שנה בדיוק לאחר שנכנס לתפקיד. סטרן המליץ על סגנו בעשר השנים האחרונות אדם סילבר, והוא החליפו בתפקיד הקומישינר.[1]

ב-2014 נבחר להיכל התהילה של הכדורסל.

ב-12 בדצמבר 2019 עבר סטרן אירוע של דימום מוחי. הוא נפטר ב-1 בינואר 2020.
