David P Toews

Our father and grandfather, David P. Toews, was born to Johann B. and Maria Penner Toews near Hillsboro, Kansas, on August 15, 1904. He peacefully left this world on March 26, 1984, at Mercy Hospital, Moundridge, Kansas. He reached the age of 79 years, 7 months, and 11 days.
In his youth Father lived in the Hillsboro community. He attended the Schlehuber School west of Hillsboro, where he received his elementary education. In 1918 the Toews family moved to Manitoba, settling on a farm in the Ste. Anne community.
Father responded to God's call to repentance and was baptized in the year of 1921, becoming a member of the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite. He embraced this faith throughout his life. Our parents, David and Katharina, were married on February 27, 1927, sharing the joys and sorrows of life for over fifty-six years. Last November Mother was taken from his side, leaving an emptiness in his life which he felt very keenly.
Father farmed in the Ste. Anne community until 1942, when we moved to Kansas. In addition to farming, Father made his livelihood by various other types of employment. Throughout his active years he was a hard worker. He enjoyed working with his children and grandchildren. Father had an outgoing personality and made many friends. Wherever he went he enjoyed visiting with people along the way.
Family life was precious to him, and he always looked forward to the children coming home. He kept in touch with many of his friends and relatives through correspondence. He wrote many cards and letters and took pleasure in hearing of the affairs of others from far and near. He enjoyed reading in general, but spent more time reading his Bible than other material.
Father experienced many frustrations and struggles within himself. Perhaps God had a special purpose in permitting him to suffer cancer with complications; for it caused him to earnestly search his heart and find a greater resignation to the ways of God. He often prayed that God would grant him patience in his suffering. He left a clear testimony of peace in his heart and love toward his fellowmen.
He leaves to mourn his departure: two sons and four daughters: John and wife Velda, Moundridge, Kansas; Pearl and husband Marvin Ensz, Hillsboro, Kansas; James and wife Olive, Yale, South Dakota; Betty and husband Clarence Penner, Iroquois, South Dakota; Alma, presently serving at Santa Ana, Mexico; Clara, Youngtown, Arizona; eighteen grandchildren; four brothers: Henry, Montezuma, Kansas; Jake, Livingston, California; Abe, Ste. Catherines, Ontario; Frank, Steinbach, Manitoba; and many relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, one son, his parents, three sisters, and three brothers.
Funeral services were held on March 29, 1984, in the Alexanderfeld Church, with Ministers Gordon Koehn and Jona Dyck in charge. Graveside services were conducted by Min. Earvey Ensz.
