Son of John Van Cleave and Rachel Demaree-Ryker.
David was born in the old original Jefferson County, that part which became Shelby County in 1792.
He was married February 16, 1809 in Shelby County, Kentucky, to Rachael Swearingen. Between them they produced 15 known children and possibly a 16th (Naomi), 14 of which grew to adulthood.
The Hopewell Cemetery is more properly known as The Hopewell Presbyterian Church Cemetery, located in Clinton Township.
