He was a son of Davis and Nancy (nee Barnes) Whelchel (Sr.), and a grandson of Francis and Martha Ann (nee Stockton) Whelchel (Sr.). Davis Whelchel (Jr.) was a great-grandson of Davis Stockton (c.1685-1761) of Albemarle County, Virginia.

The Davis Whelchel (1807-1876) who is buried at Highland Cemetery married Mary Mock (1808-1856) who is also buried at Highland Cemetery. After Mary died Davis married widow Isabel / Isabella (nee Kingery) Alexander. This Davis Whelchel was a son of John Whelchel and a grandson of Davis and Nancy (nee Barnes) Whelchel (Sr.).
