Francis Whelchel, who is buried at the Whelchel Family Cemetery in Hamilton County, Indiana, was a descendant of Francis and Martha Ann (nee Stockton) Whelchel. Francis and Martha Ann appear to have met and married in Goochland (now Albemarle) County, Virginia. Martha Ann's father was Davis Stockton (c.1685-1761) who is proven by deed records to have been in what is now Albemarle County by 1737. Francis Whelchel appears to have arrived in Philadelphia on the ship "Betsy" or "Snow Betsie" on 27 August 1739.

Francis and Martha Ann Whelchel owned property next to Davis Stockton on Virgin Spring Creek, a branch of Mechum's River. It appears that all of their children were born there, including their son Davis Whelchel (1752-1833) who was named for his grandfather Davis Stockton (c.1685-1761).

Francis, Martha Ann, and their children removed to the Gaffney area near the Broad River in Union (now Cherokee) County, South Carolina. Gaffney is about 16 miles southwest of King's Mountain. Francis Whelchel Sr and his sons would later fight the British and Loyalists in the Revolutionary War at the Battle of King's Mountain and at the Battle of Cowpens.

Davis Whelchel (1752-1833), who fought in the Revolutionary War, married Nancy Barnes and moved to Indiana. He is buried at the Whelchel Family Cemetery in Hamilton County, Indiana, as is his son Davis Whelchel (Jr.).

Also buried at the Whelchel Family Cemetery are Mary (nee Irwin) Whelchel, the first wife of Davis Whelchel (Jr.) and Sarah "Sally" Whelchel, the second wife of Davis Whelchel (Jr.). Sarah is shown living in Hamilton County, Indiana, in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 census. Sarah is still alive in 1870 and might have died about 1875. Her maiden name appears to be Hoag or Hoagland.

The Whelchel Family Cemetery is located about 5 miles east of Fishers on the north side of Geist Reservoir in Hamilton County, Indiana. The hilltop graves have unmarked fieldstones except for Davis Whelchel (Sr.) who has a modern (2001) "Revolutionary War" headstone.

"Toward the latter part of the year 1821, Messrs. Kincaid and Coffee were joined by two neighbors Samuel Halliday and James McNutt. Richard Curry, Abraham Helms and Francis Whelchel settled in the following year, and in 1825, each entered the several tracts of land which they cultivated for years afterward. . . . Other Early Settlers . . . John Whelchel . . . settled in the year 1832 . . . [in] 1833 - Davis Whelchell [settled] . . . [and in] 1835 . . . Charles B. Whelchel [settled] . . . The first election was held at a cabin on the farm of Francis Whelchel, in 1833 or 1834 . . . It was stated, by Davis Whelchel, prior to his demise, that the first cabins were erected, one on the south bank of Fall Creek, near the mouth of Thorpe's Creek, on the Isaac Helms farm; the other on what became known as the John Z. Patterson farm, where the Greenfield and Noblesville Pike crossed Fall Creek."
