About Deacon Elias Lyman

"He was one of the first settlers of the second precinct, now Southampton, Massachusetts. The tradition is that they built the first houses in Southampton in 1722 or 1724.

"He was early chosen a deacon of the church; was a delegate to the provincial congress, at Concord, Massachusetts, Oct 11 1768; with several of the town was one of a committee of correspondence; and in 1775, was a member of the provincial congress which met at Cambridge, Massachusetts and was the chairman of the Committee of Safety and Correspondence, which functioned primarily as an executive for the Congress.

"He was a frequent member of the legislature, and one of a committee of safety in the Revolutionary war, in addition to many important offices in which he was employed during his long and useful life. By his only surviving grandchild, his tall, stout and venerable form, grave and sedate demeanor, are distinctly remembered as commanding the reverential regard of his family and his friends. His descendants are very numerous, exerting a commanding influence in the various occupations and professional pursuits of life." (Notes from Ancestry.com)
