Deacon George Sumner, Sr., the fourth child of William and Mary (West) Sumner, was born was baptized 1 March 1634[/5] in Bicester, Oxfordshire, England.[1][2] He died at Milton, Massachusetts in December 1715.

He formed part of the family emigration in 1636. He was made a freeman of Massachusetts May 6, 1657. He removed to Milton, Massachusetts where he was lieutenant of the train band. In 1693-1703, he was deputy to the general court from Milton. He was ordained a Deacon of the church in 1699. In 1662, he married Mary Baker, daughter of Edward Baker at Northampton, Massachusetts. They had 12 children.[3] [4]

He was buried at Milton Cemetery, Milton, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. His memorial has a photo of his headstone, links to those of family members and a transcription of his gravestone inscription:

Here lyes the body of Deacon George Sumner, aged 81 years, died ye 11th day of December, 1715 (memorial page lists incorrect birth year).[6]

Mary Sumner died his widow on 1 Apr 1719 at age 77 in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts.
